Had a great run this morning. 8am, 55 degrees and cloud cover. Marathon course runs though several neighborhoods and then onto the NJ bordewalk.
I started out at 10:45 pace as I usually start too fast as I get caught up with the festivities but then settled into my 11 min pace. Miles 1,2,3,4 and 5 all around 11 min. This is my normal pace for training runs up to 10 miles but not a pace I can sustain over longer distances. Then mile 6,7,8,9 and 10. Again 55 min. This is better than my training runs! My best 10 mile run is 115 min but not today- today I cut off 5 minutes! 110minutes.
Unfortunately, I still had 16.2 miles left and no training runs over 11 miles. Oh yeah, I was still a little beat up from last Saturdays Marathon in TN too.
I have no idea what I can do today. How much longer can I keep this up? At 13.1 miles Im close to 2.5hours. My fastest marathon ever is 5:16 and I actually trained for that one. Ran hills, speed work, fartleks etc. Also I had the benefit of tapering. But this marathon I am no where near that trained but I'm moving well. I continue on to miles 14-20. Mixing up the famous run walk Galloway style. My right foot is flaring up but I'm heming and hawing about wether or not to go for a PR.
Around mile 20 the sun comes out and we are running through multi million dollar homes. The beach is beautiful, the houses are amazing and I'm feeling really good. Well 99% of me is feeling good but my foot is barking pretty loud. At mile 21 i stop to aide a first time marathoner who was cramping really bad. I gave him some water and an S cap. Then I get hit up for my tylenol by anothe runner. Within 30 seconds of this I get a request for sunscreen, which I was not carrying. What the hell? Am I a drug store? C'mon people leave the fat guy alone.
By now Im faced with a decision. Do I try and get 5 miles done at an 11 min pace or do I just push on at a comfortable pace and finish to train another day. I calculated my odds of finishing as strong as I started and realized that getting a marathon PR isn't as important to me as getting to the start of IMLP in 11 weeks. I finished at 5:41. Ended up walking almost more than running, or at least it felt that way, to the finish. Still happy with my finish and the run overall. I guess my increase focus on biking has not affected my running.
