Nice Long Ride

Got my lazy butt out of bed this morning and decided I'd do a ride. I've been itching to do something this weekend to get my mind off of work. As I usually do when I go out alone, I headed out with no real destination in mind. I just let my adventurous side direct me. I ended up riding down to this new subdivision everybody's been ranting and raving about - "Daybreak" - to see it was all about. Pretty nice. Then I was curious to see what was out in Herriman these days. I was checking out houses and lots, just for fun, daydreaming about moving to some of these spots. Then I rode up as far as Rose Canyon Way took me in Herriman, and was surprised to see it actually goes back into a canyon so far you can't see the valley. They've even got log cabins back in there. Again, very cool. I've never driven back in there, so it was alot of fun exploring new territory. Then I decided I'd head back and went up to U-111 (Bacchus Hwy) and took it straight to New Bingham Hwy and back to my house.

It was actually a pretty tough ride with lots of hill climbing. Heading up the canyon I mentioned (west toward the hills) is about a 3-4% grade... you can do it seated, but it's definitely slow. I had to ride in that direction more than once too because of the route. Also, the wind was blowing from the south so it made the ride a bit slower heading out in that direction, and my route was a diagonal on the way back so I had a crosswind. Still made pretty good time though, and most importantly had fun. My intention wasn't to break any speed records, it was just to enjoy my ride and get some good exercise.

Nice long bike ride today by myself.  Brett (UTTriman) and Drew (drewwhite) headed up to Logan/Hyrum for the Cache Valley Triathlon (Brett's first Oly!!), so I didn't have any workout partners to coordinate with.  I would have gone and done the race with those guys, but I'm not as looney as Brett (he's doing THREE races this month).  I figure two races this month is plenty- my wallet (and BODY) likes a break every so often :)  Besides, I put in some good time on the bike this morning, and I'd say that's as good if not better than a race anyday- am I right?

Quick Swim

Slept in this morning, and didn't have much time for a workout. Really tired from work lately, and soreness is catching up with me... Need a massage!

Anyway, did a quick continuous thousand just to get something in.

1x1000

It was a weak workout, but hey, it was a workout.

Didn't get in a workout today... Totally slammed at work.  Got a deadline creeping up and stayed up late last night getting stuff done.  Definitely will get something in tomorrow.

Ride to Work

Did the morning commute today on the bike. No close calls, and only had to stop at a couple lights. Very enjoyable. This ride was meant to be a recovery day, so I took it pretty easy, but again, ended up making better time than anticipated.

Rainy Run

Met up with Brett (UTTriman) and Drew (drewwhite) -ok, I finally admit I like the colorful names and I want to copy - and we all went down in Drew's fancy new ride to the Jordan River Parkway Trail. It was sprinkling a bit when we got there, and continued for most of the run. I felt pretty good for most of the run- The temperature was comfortable, and we were running at a pace that seemed fairly relaxed through (most of) it.

Our first mile was just barely sub-eight, second mile was about the same, third mile was roughly 8:30s (we slowed down on purpose), then we hit the end of the main trail and turned around. Drew and I stopped to take a drink at the park and Brett went ahead. We ended up getting about :45 or so behind Brett and were playing catch-up a bit. Was kind of tough, since Brett was making pretty good pace- it took us nearly a mile. We ran with Brett for the next little bit and then Drew got this wild idea that we should "push it a bit to the end"... Brett encouraged us too, so I couldn't get out of it :) No, it was good. Drew pushed me pretty good- we hit sub-seven min mi pace for a bit and it didn't take long for me to start complaining and slow down (I was feeling sick to my stomach-uggh!). As soon as I saw the end, I sprinted the last section to the car for a strong finish.

The run was uncomfortable in parts (esp. the sub-seven pace parts!), but it was good. It got me out of my comfort zone and working a little bit. It's really the only way I'm going to get faster, so I'm glad Drew drug me through it.

Ended up having a very good time for this run, and didn't even notice the rain over my gallons of sweat :)

Good start to the month.  Running keeps getting more and more comfortable at relatively fast paces the more I rack up these miles- a year ago, eight-minute miles were virtually impossible to hold for even 5K unless it was downhill.  Now it's my comfort zone.  Wow.  I'm really excited about how good running is starting to feel again.  I really struggled with it at the first of this year (it goes away sooo fast if you cut back), and now I'm starting to reach that same peak and ease I had when I was training last year.  The longer runs really make the difference.  A 5K seems short again!  So very cool!

Swim

Decided I'd better try to get some more time in the water this month-afterall, it's almost over and I've been slacking.

Well today was a good jump back into things. I hopped in the pool, and as my luck would have it, there were two other swimmers in the other two lanes that seemed to know what they were doing. I did my warmup and a few hundred yards, and ended up chatting with them after. Before I knew it I was in the middle of their workout... they told me I was welcome to participate and I took them up on it.

The workout was fairly challenging... they weren't goofing around. Lots of short speed work. They were very complimentary about my swimming-they had both swam in high school but were just getting back into it again, and I managed to keep up with the both of them pretty well through most of the workout (although I was reminded I have a few things to work on, i.e., flip turns, bilateral breathing, etc.)

Here was the workout:

Warmup:

1x400
4x50 Build

Main Set:

8x25 Hypoxics
1x500 (8:30)

--began workout with new swim friends

8x50 on :50s (stayed consistently around :40s/10s rest)
12x25 sprints
8x50 on :50s (fell off toward end to :45s)

100 Easy
1x200 on 3:00 (3:05 - I was pooped!)

Cooldown

2x100 Easy

Good swim workout today- It's so much more challenging when someone else is there to push you a bit.  And I'm definitely feeling it now- I could definitely tell I haven't been in the pool for awhile.  Still did well though, so I don't feel bad.

I almost made my swimming goal for the month (my wimpy 15000 yds) so I feel pretty good.  I stomped over my other two goals for the cycling and running, esp. the running, and that was my focus this month, so I'm happy.  Good stuff!
