December 2

Today was a day off. Drove out and checked the course for tomorrow's race. It is very flat and the swim looks a little shallow. I don't know if there are any rocks so I'll have to enter the water with caution. I can't wait!

December 1

Run
  • 30m
  • 3.00 miles
  • 10m /Mi

I went for a short 30 min run this morning. No HRM and unsure of distance.

We just got back from our little getaway. Its 9pm and we need to unpack. We had a great time just hanging out and seeing the sights. I'll take a drive out to check out the course for the Kalaeloa Tri tomorrow.

Very doubtful I'll get any training at all done today. Flying to Kauai with the wife and kids this morning. Hopefully at least a light run or swim tomorrow morning. We return tomorrow night. I haven't seen Kauai since Iniki tore it apart so it will be very interesting to see the recovery from the hurricane 13-14 years ago. The kids have never been there so it'll be a big adventure for them too.

Swim
  • 17m 31s
  • 731.52 meters
  • 02m 23s /100 meters

Kailua Beach Park again today. This time I swam the opposite direction. Conditions were pretty smooth however swimming east at that time of day made it difficult to see where I was going due to the sun. I ended up swimming quite wide and most assuredly added unnecessary distance to my swim.

Not sure what to do today. A ride would probably be best but the schedule doesn't look good for it. I think the best chance would be for a swim after I drop the kids at school. The family and I will spend Wed and Thu on Kauai so I'll try to get an easy run and some core work in while we're there. Friday will be an off day prior to the Kalaeloa Sprint.

* I called the race organizers for Saturday's event and they told me that it wasn't going to be a large field. I haven't registered yet and they said they didn't forsee me having any problems registering at the race. They said they'll even have shirts available for race-day-registrations! :)

Run
  • 53m 03s
  • 5.50 miles
  • 09m 39s /Mi

Ran from home today after work. Lots of cars but not bad. From corner down to Kahikili Hwy across the big dip (long straight down then up), turn around at Heeia St and then back. I prefer mornings.

Well crap! The acting Major just informed us that we are no longer allowed to take 1 hour each day to workout. That really sucks! I'm going to lobby to regain this allotment. Hopefully he'll see reason and the associated benefits of allowing us to train on duty. As such I'm not sure what I'll do for training today.

Bike
  • 52m
  • 13.00 miles
  • 15.00 Mi/hr

My bike is definitely slow. I could have probably stepped it up a little here.

Run
  • 32m
  • 3.00 miles
  • 10m 40s /Mi

I messed up on my watch while timing the run portion. When I hit the halfway mark my watch showed 11:21 but wasn't adding time. I must have hit the stop button by mistake. I added 5 mins to my overall time just to try and make up the difference of my blunder. Its close enough for practice.

Swim
  • 15m
  • 457.20 meters
  • 03m 16s /100 meters

Not sure of this distance. Given the time the distance may have been longer.

Well, the goal is to do my own little triathlon today. The wife just got home from work (she works nights) and is taking a quick nap. She says she wants to go with my to watch my T area so I can do this. I kind of feel bad getting her out of bed but if she wants to go... I'll accept. I wanna do something close to a full sprint just to see how it feels.

12:32 - Wife never made it out of bed so I ended up picking up my oldest step-daughter who volunteered to watch my transition area. Worked out quite well.

The swim wasn't bad at all. After swimming the 2K earlier in the week 500m seems awefully short. Not sure about the swim distance. It may have been longer than 500m given the time it took me to get to T1. Felt good.

T1 was easy enough. Nothing complicated. I think I was out of there in about 1 min.

I really need to work on my bike. I felt sluggish as I always do. I lost one of my bike gloves too! I did push a little but I guess I need to push more since I never really felt overworked at all on the bike.

T2 was quick. Oh... I need to tighten my peddle clips since one of my shoes fell off while I was approaching T2 as I was taking off my shoes (had to turn around and pick it up).

Starting the run felt like running in 12" of pudding. My legs did not want to move. It took about 5 mins for the blood to loosen and the legs to start doing their thing. I ran the same pace I always do and it felt fine. The HR was good all the way to the last mile where I stopped paying attention to keeping within my range. Again, this is proabably one area I can increase my effort although I'm not sure it would have much of an impact on my overall time.

Overall time... 1hr 39 mins! I wanted to beat 1:45 and I did.

This was fun and it did show me that a sprint triathlon is well within my capabilities. I now look forward to Dec 3 with much less intrepidation. Bring it on!

November 26

Well, the wife wants to go shopping today which means I probably won't be able to fit in a workout until this evening. Hopefully I won't lose my ambition and I at least run or bike today.

Well, it looks like today is another rest day after all. Didn't shop, didn't train... just hung around the house with the wife all day. I was thinking about doing a mini tri tomorrow morning. I wish I had someone to watch my transition area so I could at least practice before Saturday's sprint. Oh well, Dec 3 was meant to be a trial by fire so I guess I'll just keep it as such.

Maybe I needed the day off anyway. That nagging little sore spot on the outside of my right knee feels like it is getting better. Hopefully tomorrow it can handle a 3 miler after some swim and bike action.
