Last run here in Tokyo and it happened to be the hottest day here. Absolutely oppressive so took it very easy.

Flight out of Tokyo at 4:30 pm. Took a limo bus from hotel to airport at 1 pm, getting to airport at 2:30 pm. They did not have my reservation (no ticket) since my flight over was all screwed up and they cancelled my return flight. Luckily they were able to rebook me quite easily, though, so no major problems. I also had time to file a baggage claim with Delta (they are going to refund me $105 for the work outfit I had to buy), and get to the gate. Actually slept about 4 hours on the flight. Layover in Chicago, another flight, and home by 8 pm. Tim and I went out to dinner when I got home.

Had planned on sleeping in til 7:45 to catch up for last night but could not sleep again in the wee AM hours. Fell asleep quickly by 10:30 but wide awake at 4:30 am. At least I got 6 hours of solid, uninterrupted sleep. Layed in bed til 5:45 trying to get back to sleep. Then checked email and up for a run. Wrapped myself in the "humidity blanket" (ala Brad) that is Japanese summer. Luckily it was cloudy so at least the sun wasn't blaring on me. The loop starts out in the open sun, flat, the gradually inclines for about 1 mile, but it's shady and slight headwind. Then downhill and flat in a mix of shade and sun.

Sessions from 9 am to 4 pm and then reception at 7 pm. Flying home tomorrow.

Chose to run outside. Hotel is very close to Imperial Palace, where there is a nice paved 5K loop around the castle. There was a 10K race going on so that was cool. It is so hot and humid here, way more humid than PA. Drank 2 full bottles of water to keep myself hydrated. Stopped at mile 5 to fill up bottle and there was a bench where I took a rest to get my HR down for a bit. Even though it was so hot and humid, I was happy to be running today. This is baby Straub's first but not last run on Japanese soil.

Another poor night's sleep. In bed by 11:45 and asleep by 12:00, but wide awake at 5:20 am. Never fell back to sleep. Read and did some work again. Ate a light breakfast before the run. Then true breakfast afterward, befor getting ready for live surgery. Got to go to the world's largest LASIK center and see a Kamra Inlay procedure. Also tour of facility. Just amazing, amazing practice and awesome to be in the operating room with one of the world's best. Sessions from 5 pm til 9 pm.

Lift after run.

Since I had no luggage I walked around Tokyo to buy a few essentials, like underwear, a dress and shoes for the meeting, and of course a workout outfit and sneakers. Tokyo is expensive, and I didn't get out of the sporting goods store in under $200. Luckily I found a GAP and they gave me a 40% off coupon, so I scored undies, dress, and shoes for about $80. At least I made out there. Also figured that I could hopefully return sneaks if my luggage came by the next day; the last time I called the luggage hotline, they though my luggage was still in Chicago.....Them at 7 pm they called and told me my luggage was on a flight and would get into Tokyo at 9:30 pm. Suitcase arrived at 10:45 to hotel. Yippee!!!

August 17

13 hour time difference means I landed in Tokyo at 4:30 pm local time. Needed to take a 2-hour bus from airport to downtown Tokyo that left airport at 6:25, getting me to hotel by 8:30 pm. Went out to find food and in bed by 10:20 pm, but wide awake at 2:30 am and up til 7:30 am reading and doing work. Then finally got back to sleep from 7:30 to 10:30.

Travel day. Up at 6:30 am for a 9:30 flight to Chicago, then Chicago to Tokyo. Long story, but I am eating breakfast at the airport and there is an announcement that my Chicago flight is cancelled. Hurry up and pay the bill and try to find out what's going on. Line 50 people deep, everyone trying to get their flights rescheduled; waited in line for about 40 minutes then at the counter for another 20. Looks like every flight that gets me to Chicago is too late for the Tokyo flight. Finally the woman who is helping me cancels my entire itinerary and rebooks me on Delta (I was flying US Air). Flight leaves in 10 minutes out of another terminal. So sprint through the airport, and make it just as they are calling final boarding. Sweaty but made it! I knew that since I had to sprint there was no way my luggage was making it. On the bright side, I was supposed to sit first class to Chicago and the woman helping me said she couldn't get me into first class to Atlanta but that she'd "see what I can do" for the Tokyo leg. When I go to check in for that flight, I see I am business class. Have never traveled that and let me tell you it is THE BEST. I had my own little pod with a seat that reclined completely into a bed. Also tons of food and good food, too. That 14.5-hour flight flew by and I got to sleep about 5.5-6 hours. Landed in Tokyo and waited for luggage to unload, but like I had thought mine wasn't there. Oh well.

Second time nausea has led to me throwing up. But right after I felt better so got dressed and out for a run. Took a slightly different route and ended up being longer than expected.
