REST DAY.

Thanks to some liberal use of "the stick" last night before I went to bed, I am not sore today! Okay, maybe a little bit, but I really have to tense the muscles in weird ways in order to feel it. Walking around and such I don't feel it at all. So, that's a good sign, even if I did feel like death for most of yesterday afternoon. Taking it easy today. Making some chili, doing some laundry and other cleaning... basically all the stuff that I didn't do yesterday because I was, um, incapacitated. Mmm, chili.

July 8

Run
  • 2h 37m 40s
  • 13.00 miles
  • 12m 07s /Mi

Long run. Second verse, same as the first... except worse. Ate a small breakfast as I thought I was going to run early. Ended up running later and later, but kept thinking "I'm about to go running, I can't eat now." In the end, it had been several hours since I'd last eaten, and I hadn't eaten much then, so the three gels and handful of pretzels I had on me weren't nearly enough and my legs really felt it. Had plenty of water, but nowhere near enough salt/electrolyte to replace all that I was losing via sweat. It was pretty darn hot outside (mid-upper 90s). Mile splits:

Mile #1: 10:33.19

Mile #2: 12:15.39

Mile #3: 11:16.16

Mile #4: 11:12.09

Mile #5: 11:17.60

Mile #6-7: 21:54.69 (forgot to hit "lap" )

Mile #8: 11:30.75

Mile #9: 12:54.01 (including 2:45 of walking--I was really starting to struggle here: nausea, exhaustion)

Mile #10: 12:35.81

Mile #11: 12:19.71

About halfway through mile #12 I started walking, and I walked all the way back to the car. It was all I could do just to keep moving. Desperately wanted to lie down in the shade, but knew I needed to get to the car (where I had some Accelerade and bags of ice in a cooler, not to mention my phone). Head hurt, vision was kind of funny, and I felt stupid. Kind of like being drunk, but more unpleasant. Once I got back I called someone to pick me up, 'cause I was in no shape to drive. Oof. You'd think (and I thought) that I'd learned my lesson two weeks ago. Evidently not. Determined to get it right for the next long run.

Meanwhile, my parents (and a good friend's mom who's sort of a mom to me as well) are seriously questioning whether or not this whole endurance sports thing is good for me. :)

UPDATE: now that I've looked it up, it's pretty clear to me that I was suffering from heat exhaustion (at least in part). Of the 13 symptoms listed, I was exhibiting 10. Eesh. Definitely need to be more careful next time: run earlier or later, take more electrolyte stuff with me, and from now on I'm not doing my long runs alone!

Shakedown ride now that my bike is here. Verdict: time for a new bike...

Spinning at the rock gym.

Not sure if I'm going to be able to squeeze anything in today. Major crunch trying to get the results chapter of my thesis to my advisor by the end of today, and this morning/early afternoon was busy with errands and driving Steve to the airport. I'm hoping to make it to the rock gym this evening for some bouldering and spinning, but I might just end up doing core exercises at home.

July 5

Run
  • 50m
  • 5.00 miles
  • 10m /Mi

Planned:
10-15 min easy warmup
3x1mi @ PMP-:30 (9:30), 1min rest
10-15 min easy cooldown

Actual:
12:16 warmup
Mile 1: 9:12
Mile 2: 9:22
Mile 3: 9:29
9:42 cooldown

Swim
  • 45m
  • 1500.00 yards
  • -----

3x100 easy
6x50 (swim golf)
5x100 with best stroke count from swim golf
4x50 moderate pace
1x200 alternating 50 pull, 50 swim

Slow swim. Still not feeling 100%, plus there were lane etiquette issues on the part of certain fellow swimmers that made for slow paces and long rests.

July 4

Happy Fourth, everyone!

Still feeling a little on the ill side. Really hoping this doesn't turn into something big. Having soup for lunch, but I have to spend the whole day working on my thesis, which isn't going to help. Gonna see how I feel this evening, and hopefully go for a run or a ride.

July 3

Swim
  • 35m
  • 1350.00 yards
  • -----

200 swim
4x50 swim, RI=:15
200 pull
4x50 swim, RI=:10
200 kick
4x50 swim, RI=:05
100 swim, second half fast
50 easy

Somewhat shorter-than-planned swim this morning. Shoulders were tired in a pre-tweak sort of way, and we didn't want to push them. Neither of us has swum much in the last month due to travel and other things, so we're trying to be smart about building back up to the longer workouts. It's frustrating not to be able to swim much (or fast) right now, but it would be still more frustrating to get injured. Meanwhile, my stroke count has gone WAY up. 17 for a push-off and 19 off a turn--both up 4 from where I was a couple of months ago. Gotta get that stroke count back down!

Tonight we're heading to the rock gym to do some climbing and spinning. Ended up with a sore throat in the afternoon, so the climbing/spinning was out. Hoping to feel well enough to work out tomorrow.
