August 10

Well. Yeah. Allrighty, here it goes. 4min before the start my goggles broke. Oh crap I thought and ran with my wetsuit to a sportstore, who had a tent in the expo. Asked for goggles and said I will pay later, fortunately they were forthcoming and I got a pair of Adidas orange goggles that would fit rather well. Swim start. I started in the back and out right, we had to do 2x 970m laps. As soon as I got into my rythm (breathing every 3 strokes), I started passing the croud. Rest of the way was uneventful, I got out of water 36:18, wich is awesome for me, for I did 43:xx on my last HIM. T1 went rather well, a little long, 3:12, but otherwise OK. Bike start. Right at the start there is a verical 100m climb to the highest point of the road, we had to do 3 laps. Then a really steep downhill wit ha s bend in the end, it was perhaps 400m long, but I managed 60km/h, befiore I had to break. The course was VERY hilly, in total 1500m of climbing. First 18km of the lap is downhill with some climbs and one nasty climb Then a sharp right turn to head back to the event center. It starts with a 6km constant climb. Everyone was literally crawling up there. Then a brief downhill and 3 nasty steep hills in a row. Then back to the beginning of the lap to start the terrible vertical climb. I started out too fast, first lap (31km) flew by 0:55, I was really drinking a lot. Weather was hot, over 30C, so I had terrible thirst constantly, but I couldn't carry more than 2 bottles. On the second lap I slowed down considerably, lap time was 1:01. The hills and heat were killing my legs, but I felt quite good still. On the third lap at 65km mark I felt a cramp sensation on my right quad. Holy crap, I thought, cause cramps were the only thing I was afraid of. At 79km mark the nasty 6km climb started and my quads locked up. Thats it I thought. Tried to unlock my legs and spent nearly 10min next to the road in agony. My teammate, whom I passed 2 laps ago, threw me a Magnesium vile to help, but that didn't work. I couldn't put any pressure on my legs and couldn't make my right leg straight and I couldn't bend my left leg. So I cried a little from dissapointment, switched to the easiest gear and tried pedaling. I had to walk all the big hills back to the T2, fortunately I could cruise downhill. 80km mark hit at 2:30, 92km mark 3:20. So last 12km took me 50minutes. Got to T2, could barely move and decided to DNF. Worst thing that could have happened, did happen. I could have probably walk the run course, but I didn't see the point, I trained really hard for this! So currently feeling little low, have to find out how to prevent cramps, since I have to deal with them practically every single training, and move on.
