Cloudy, wet and warm ride in today... didn't rain at all, but the heat made me sweat. ;)

This was a typical ride for me... start out easy and continue to build as I get closer to town. When I hit the sub-division/industrial roads, I'm doing 40-50km/h on the flats and 30 km/h up the grades to keep drivers reasonably happy. First time I felt that I could really spin my legs with some power. Things are getting back to normal... if you can call my life normal. ;) LOL

Headwind... need I say more. That Sucked with a capital SUCK. I tried hard to keep the effort steady, but the last 7 km was directly into the wind and is pretty much wide open fields. There is one little grade that seemed to never end... but I kept grinding up and made it over the top only to be greeted by a good blast of wind. Fortunately the last 3 km is pretty flat, but it hurt non-the-less. Oh well, legs needed hard work tonight... right? ;)

Morning commute... but with Xena instead of the Beast... I didn't get a chance to ride her this weekend due to weather and volunteering, so decided to take her out this morning to get to work. I have to make up some hours for Stat Holiday's and have some free time this morning before I have to play taxi dad again this afternoon.

I will leave at noon and take a long route home, just to put some miles in.

GLORIOUS morning for a ride. Calm, clear, warm and just plain beautiful. My morning cycling partner and I rode along the quiet roads with hardly a care. He's a great partner... never complains, and stays with me no matter my speed, always on my wheel. Yup, my shadow and I cruise along in the morning light. Me gliding over the roads, him gliding over the fields. I can't think of anything better... well except maybe NOT having to go to work. ;)

No my heart didn't explode... 223 is a little blip... if I had to guess it would be 125-130. I really didn't work hard this morning.

Left work at noon and rode home the long way. Went south, over the hill near Pinnacle Dr. Then headed out of town on New Dundee Rd. I kept the effort steady but not hard.

New Dundee Road is the absolute BEST road to ride on. It was recently repaved (most of it last year) and there is plenty of maintenance strip to ride on. Once thru New Dundee it becomes Bridge St and is a quiet country road, not nearly as nice pavement but still nice. I had this great stretch of road with a slight tail-wind... it felt GREAT even though it was almost 30*C. Xena rides so nicely I didn't want to stop, but I had to get home and p/u #2 at school for a massage appt at 2... oh well, an hour of gliding over the country roads is better then nothing. :)

Sport
  • Race Volunteering
  • 2h 00m

I put down 2 hours, but it was actually 5 hours... standing at the street corner and directing traffic. Had a couple irate individuals who couldn't see the sense in going the long way out of the sub-division when they could see the corner only 250m away. Must be tough living in multi-million dollar homes, driving Mercedes/Cadillac/BMW's and being inconvenienced by adding 8km to their drive. Would they rather hit a cyclist head-on?? sheesh people, we're doing this for your peace of mind and safety... it's not just some whim!

Cycle race volunteering duties this morning... we'll see what I can get into this afternoon.

Run

I stayed in bed... but was awake at 7... should have gotten up and did a run earlier but didn't have my mojo yet.

After finally getting out of bed to take #3 to work, I came home and went for a short slog. Was running along and thinking "I feel pretty good, maybe I'll do 5k!" but then sanity clicked and I kept it to 3k. No use hurting myself just as I'm starting to feel better... besides, I need to start running from scratch again.

I kept this pretty easy... trying to keep my HR in the 115-120 range... just a Z1-2 run for me. I think I pretty much nailed that... checked a couple times and slowed up if the HR was going up. Who said old dogs can't be taught? ;)

Steady pace... no walking. GREAT feeling run. Felt good too... running in the rain. :)

After getting home and trying to cool down... took a shower (which didn't take).. then headed out on our Saturday chores.

  • p/u coffee @ local coffee company
  • drop off Sweetums and #1 at hospital to take supplies to MIL who was admitted again on Friday (for observation... hopefully just for the weekend)
  • take back T.E.N.S. unit we rented for #2 to use in fighting his Sciatica (wasn't working)
  • p/u Sweetums & #1 at hospital... drive across town to mall
  • grab a quick bite to eat
  • head back to LBS to p/u my wheel (been in for repairs the last two weeks Cry... broken spoke took that long to fix?)
  • turn around and p/u Sweetums and #1 at mall after their shopping expedition
  • stop at local video store to return movied and p/u weeks supply (yes we're movie buffs)
  • grocery shopping
  • home, unload and put away groceries
  • put tire on wheel and put bike back together (Xena is now ready for a looooong ride)
  • change skewer on beast so #3 can try riding on trainer before he takes it out on the road with me (yes, he's interested)
  • order pizza
  • have supper and watch Monsters vs Aliens on TV (mindless entertainment)
  • Go out to see Prometheus at the theatres (WOW... very awesome movie. Great effects, well thought out story... answered almost all questions as to the first Alien movie)
  • come home... prep for volunteering tomorrow

Yes, it was a busy day. Tomorrow is supposed to be HOT and lovely... but I won't be riding in the morning as I have volunteered myself and #3 at the local O-Cup race tomorrow. The K-W Classic has been held in Kitchener for the last 25 years ... in the same area... and this will be my first time to see it. Our cycling club is the host club and as #3 needs volunteer hours for his HS diploma, I decided to get him out doing some volunteering at races and cycling events. We have agreed to do the first two races... 8-12 (ish). Mostly our duties will be to direct traffic on the course. This is held in a "sub-division" of Kitchener called Hidden Valley. It is very secluded ... between an industrial park, The Grand River and Hwy 8 (main highway into town).... and we must direct the local residents to drive on the wrong side of the road... in the wrong direction... to get out of the sub-division so that the racers have an entire lane to themselves and their won't be any issues... hopefully. They have graciously allowed this race to continue in the same area the last number of years, even though the area has grown SIGNIFICANTLY. Let's hope they will understand if there are delays.... and they let the race continue, because it's a tough little course.

Felt like giving some power today... so once I warmed up I just let 'r go. The Beast was feeling particularly frisky and we had some fun roaring up and down the hills. :)

One motorist (read a$$) that should be taken out and beat. As I was going thru the sub-division.. AT THE SPEED LIMIT.. I had a car following me. No biggie, I was doing 50 km/h, so they couldn't pass me and I was riding in the middle of the street to avoid getting doored by anyone getting out of parked cars. We then come to stop sign, which I stop at... and proceed down the hill on Huron Rd... I knew he would be following me, but expected him to be courteous and pass when clear. NOPE... passed within a foot off my handle bar, with a car coming towards us. I'm sorry, but I wasn't inconveniencing you, why do you have to threaten my life???? Lost causes! :(

Lots of headwinds going home... the absolute worst direction too. No respite, didn't matter which direction I went... so picked a farely sheltered route and spun as easily as I could.

Made it to Bleams Road and was feeling good... saw another cyclist head down the road, so I chased him. Caught him at 37 km/h in SMALL Chain ring... drafted him for about .5 km, then had to turn off. I thanked him for the draft and we parted ways... nice guy. :)

No outrageous motorist situations... so it was a good ride. Of course, the route I took home is the absolute LEAST travelled roads (not the smoothest either), but it keeps me out of vehicles way, and them out of my life.

Morning commute... felt fine so rode at my normal pace. Still having issues on the hills... as in no stamina... so I will have to keep working on them for a while.

Ok ride this morning, not many cars at 6:00 am... although I did have a transport truck cut me off in the round-about... had to slam on the brakes or hit him. Not sure what I can do differently... he probably would have done the same thing if I was a car and in the same position. Many people have NO clue how to drive in a round-about, let alone what to do when a cyclist is in it. :o

Bike to Dr office, then home. Slow because of all the stop lights.

Worked hard on the first half to make it to appt. on time. Then took it a little easier after treatment. Headwinds and hills made it tough.

HR is for first half...forgot to start watch after leaving Dr office.

Today had to be an easy ride... my legs are still recovering from the weekend and it's time to be a little smart. I can't keep pushing the hard gears or I'm going to burn out. So it was easy spinning and light pressure on the pedals. Felt good... even though I could have gone MUCH faster, I resisted the urge. I even coasted down most hills and stretched my calves and achilles, that felt good. :)

As you can see from the HR info... that was easy. :o

Crazy ride home...sunshine from work for 3 km, rain for 14 km, wet road for 2 km, then dry roads for 4 km. The rain was hard though, stinging and painful...but I kept moving forward.

Easy ride though, took it easy again...felt great even though it was wet and uncomfortable.

I got myself a new HRM on Monday... another Polar as I'm very happy with their products... it's basic, but functional. For a laugh and to get used the strap, I put it on and laid in bed for 5 minutes to get an approx. resting heart rate. The number was 45... so it could be lower then that after waking up in the morning. :O
