August 4

Yes, yes, yes. I'm taking a rest day!  (Boy are there some naggy people here!) ;)  Actually, I considered going over to the pool to do my drill work, but my shoulder is a little sore  from doing woodchoppers with the medicine ball, so I'll let everything rest. Back is much, much better this morning.  I can stand up straight without a 30 second delay and I have just a little twinge.  SO, I should be able to resume beating the crap out of myself tomorrw.  (kidding - lighten up) ;)  Actually, this is a rather light week for me since I have a tri on Saturday and a ride on Sunday, so I should be fully functional and rested by then. :)  Spent yesterday watching old chick flicks, You've Got Mail, Six Days, Seven Nights, and Regarding Henry and working a jigsaw puzzle from my recliner.  Fred was in the same room watching movies with me and scanning old slides.  Fun, lazy day. :)  I took a couple good stretch breaks and after my longer yoga session last night, the back was feeling good better.  It's inexcusable for me not to stretch more.  It's important to this aging body of mine.

You know, one of these days I'm going to stop being so stubborn.  I really shouldn't have ridden today.  Should have rested and given my body a chance to recover from the beating its been taking.  Last night I should have done a normal core workout instead of one that was designed for someone in impeccable condition training for their next bodybuilding competition.  What the hell was I thinking doing moves that I normally don't attempt with an 8lb medicine ball.  Hmmmm?  Today's ride wasn't bad, in fact it was downright pleasant.   I tried out part of the route that I found a couple of weeks ago and its one of  those roads that you can just ride on forever.  Nice wide road with shoulders, little traffic and almost flat. Temperature was cool  and it was a perfect morning.  Heart rate was low.  Everything was right, except my body didn't feel right.  My hands were numb for almost the entire ride.  My legs were incredibly tired and my back ached the whole morning.  Should have rested.  Oh well, shoulda, woulda, coulda.  Maybe I'll know better next time.  But I'm really mad at me right now.  Everytime I get things rolling along nicely, I have to go and do something stupid.  Granted, my stupidity isn't rearing it's head nearly as often, but it's still there, just lurking under the surface.....  Okay, well what's done is done, so I'll see if I can't minimize the damage and rest up this afternoon.  Will try several sessions of easy stretching to see if I can't get the kinks out of my back.  I don't think I have any lasting injury that a day or two of rest won't take care of.   At least until my next act of genius. ;)

Easy, long bike ride on tap this morning.  Back is sore this morning from doing the core moves that I knew were too advanced for me last night.  Hoping that some yoga and stretching will work the kinks out.  I suspect that once I get out on the bike, everything will be fine. :)

Core torture involving fitball & 8lb medicine ball

OWS this afternoon.  Swam along the swim area buoys.  On the return trip, the wind picked up pretty good making it difficult to swim against the current.  I figure it was good practice for river swimming.  ;)

Had trouble focusing today on the run.  Didn't have a bad time, but didn't enjoy it as much as I should have.  I'm guessing maybe a combination of not having proper rest yesterday and pushing with some hills.  Weather was perfect - it's a beautiful morning out - I should have had more fun.  Made a bathroom/water stop just before the 5 mile mark.  Very smart to incorporate a bathroom into my route. ;)   I took a bottle of Infinit with me.  Could have used another one - or at least part of one.  I've been running in my bike vest so I can stash a bottle in my back pocket.  It's not so comfortable running with it though.  Don't think I'd like having two back there, but as the runs get longer, I may have to try it out.

Going to chill out for a while, get my bike ready for tomorrow.  The other night when I aired up the back tire, the part that you unscrew on the valve broke off.  The tire is holding air, but I'm going to have to replace it sometime and I'd rather do it now than out on the road.  Also need to make a couple of adjustments.  Can't shift into my granny gear, and I noticed a slight wiggle in my handlebars.  Fred says he knows how to fix both, so I'm going to let him.

Long run, ows, and stength on the agenda today.  I'm excited to get out and run.  Today will be only the second time I've ran more than 6 miles since I hurt my foot last May.  It feels great to start building the mileage again. :)

I spent yesterday afternoon sitting on my butt in front of the computer/television.  :) I now have a kinda-sorta plan in place for the Muncie HIM and the USAF marathon for next year.  I don't have warm fuzzies about the HIM training plan since I'm slow and I don't think this plan will give me enough volume - it almost seems too easy.  But my little pea brain is happy now that there isn't this huge goal out there without a plan to achieve it, so maybe I can relax a little.   Definitely need to work on the swim volume over the winter.

August 1

Well, we worked outside longer than planned, but the yard and chipping is done. (I didn't even break the chipper, Sharon!)  Going to spend the rest of the afternoon and evening vegging out on the computer and catching up with Project Runway that I haven't had a chance to watch this season.

Goodness, it was a bit of a shock this morning to see all the orange squares gone and 3 green ones already coloring August.  Ive got a fun month planned with a short sprint and olympic distance tri and an "official" metric century.  I'm also very excited to head down to Louisville later this month to watch some great BT friends fulfill their ironman dream. :)  Good stuff this August!

Today is a rest day for me.  I don't feel bad, but I'll take it as easy as I can to prepare for tomorrow's long run, which is up to 6 miles. gulp.  I finally got some branches trimmed yesterday, so we'll haul out the chipper today and get them cleaned up.

Drills

Felt good out there this morning!  Nice mix of hills & flat.  Really enjoyed the rolling hills and the country roads.  Stayed very relaxed on both the bike and run, and my heart rate reflects it. :)  On the run, whenever I start thinking about how far I had left to go, I would immediately switch to another thought.  my next race, IMKY, the current song on my MP3, or the bird that was chirping on the wire.   Worked well.  Walked for about 1/2 mile back to the car and stretched well.  Took ~15 minutes between bike and run.  Had to hit the bathroom, ate a banana, and changed my shoes.  Finished too late to swim in the outdoor pool at the Y, so I went next door to my MIL's pool for a few drills.  Only about half the size of the Y's pool, but I could jump in with my bike shorts and sports bra.  Awesome great way to finish the workout.  :)  BTW, Infinit ROCKS!  Drank a bottle on the bike and almost another full one on the run.  I can't stand the taste of the stuff either before or after workouts, but while you're out there sweating, it's like nectar. :)  I love that I don't HAVE to eat on the bike or run, Infinit gives me everything I need nutrition-wise.  Good stuff! :)

Thursday is one of my tougher training days.  Bike-run brick.  I'm also going to do so easy drills at the pool.  Nothing tough, just enough to keep the balance going and relax a bit after the run.   Goning to change up my bike route a little and add a few hills into my normal flat route.   10 miles on the same road I rode yesterday and the last 10 on the bike path.  I figure even if the hills I travel aren't huge, they're gonna help me more than riding flat all of the time.

Quickie before dinner because I knew I wouldn't get anything in after beer. :)

Switched things around today.  Worked in the office in the am.  Went out for a ride in the pm.  I really enjoyed the ride this afternoon and there was very little traffic.  Hit a few hills, but stayed relaxed and had fun.

Okay, so I need to find just a little more elevation, but tomorrow's a tough day, so didn't want to push it too hard.  ;) Doc, then some strength work left for this afternoon.  Decided to stay in this evening.  Corn and Paulaner Hefe-weizen beat out sitting in bleachers in thunderstorms watching the bands. :)

Ahhh, a new day.  I need one.  Yesterday I broke the shredder, couldn't find the lopers to prune trees and broke the handle off the lawn mower.  Ended up mowing with the riding mower and trimming with the weed eater.  Fun, fun. ;) This morning I have a ride to start the day - gonna mix some hills in.  Office work, laundry, strength workout, gyn appointment, and if it doesn't rain tonight, we're going to a drum and bugle corp competition.  If it does, maybe I'll just grill some burgers, get some corn and have my favorite adult chilled beverage. :) :)

Heart rate monitor didn't work for most of the run - That's why the funky numbers. When it was working, HR did seem a little high.

Just registered for my last race of the season.  Rates go up on Friday, so may as well save the $10.  I've been doing alot of Ironman thinking.  Know my race is two years out, but hey, it's how I pass the time. ;)  Knowing that the run is my weakest area, my strategy is to get as good as I can in the water and on the bike and leave myself lots of time for the run.  I'm just looking to finish here, I've finally accepted that I'm not fast or talented, nor will I ever be, but I'm having a great time, and really enjoying the ride, so it's all worth it in the end. :)  HIM thoughts also:  I've been looking at Muncie for next year, but if I do a race in mid July, I'm only going to have about 10-12 weeks to train and training will start right after tax season.  I'd like a little more time to prepare, since any sort of structured workouts is out of the question for early April.  Maybe I can find a HIM in early/mid August that might give me a little more flexibility on training time.  Or perhaps I can do prep training in March, take a couple weeks off in early April and ease back into a structured program the end of April.  I've also got the full marathon to consider for next year.  I love the USAF marathon in late September, but maybe doing another one later, say October, would be better. Seems kind of silly to be worrying about this so soon, but I'm just not a "wait til the last minute" kind of gal. I enjoy kicking around options (yep, worrying, its what I do) :)

Uneventful workouts this morning.  Went a little longer in the pool since I need to start building a little more distance endurance for my Olympic.  Run wasn't bad/wasn't great - kinda ho hum.  I'll take it. :)

Swim and run on the agenda this morning.  I woke up thinking, "I get to run today".  Love it when that happens. :)
