The question is: will this make me faster?
August 6
I drove the course from yesterday, and it was actually a bit short. I would add about 45 seconds or so to yesterday's time to find my true 10K time.
I was going to try to get up early to ride today, but after being on call for a week straight, it was nice to sleep in. I hope to do a long ride tomorrow (20-25 miles).

Real good 10K today. New PR by about 2 minutes.
Update: After going back through my training log, I noticed that this is my PR at this distance by 3 minutes. I've been feeling like I could get one under 45 for quite some time now, but I never tried doing it for various reasons.
This is about what I'm hoping for next year at Hy-Vee. If I can do my 10K in 43 or so, that's shave 10 minutes right off the back end of the race. That might not be realistic after the first 2 legs, but I have 10.5 months to train, so I'll try.

Tony and I set out to ride 10 miles today. He's going to do the Belmond tri with me. He said he hasn't been on a bike for years. He rode my mountain bike while I rode my new QR. We just went nice and easy, trying to get his feet wet. Of course, after about 15 minutes it started to rain, so we had to head home. Not much of a workout, but I did get to stretch my legs a bit.

Very muggy and warm for 6:30 AM. I started off planning to do 4.5 miles, butI felt pretty good through about 3 miles, and so I thought I'd just loop around some more and do a 10K. After about 3.5 miles, I started getting some pretty bad cramps, so I decided to just stop at 4.5 like originally planned. I probably was a little dehydrated despite efforts to drink water before leaving. I still hope to do a 10K (possibly this weekend) and shoot for 45 minutes.
On an unrelated note, the collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis kind of struck home for me - Salzwedel, Westberg, and I used to live about 6 blocks from there. We'd travel that bridge all the time. Very scary, and tragic to hear about the people who have died. I hope no more injuries become of it. I also hope engineers are able to quickly and accurately assess the structural integrity of all the other bridges nearby and elsewhere.

Reverse brick. Read run first.
Legs were not as tired as I expected them to be. I was really pushing hard to try to feel spent at the end of 10 miles. I still think I can do a little better, but not much. Imaginary T2 (bike-to swim) was 17 seconds.
Pretty good pace, right about what would normally get me 7-minute pace, if I would have picked it up for the last half mile like I usually do.
Reverse transition (run-to-bike) was 55 seconds in my imaginary transition zone (driveway and garage). Basically, change my shoes, drink some water, put on my helmet.
Overall, this went pretty well. Total time was 21:12 + :55 + 27:04 + :17 = 49:28. I'm obviously in a very specific training cycle for Belmond. The swim is supposedly 160m, but who knows how accurate that is. Let's add 3 minutes for the swim, and the total is 52:28. Compared to last year's times, here: http://dogdays.ccax.net/2006.html that time would have placed 5th, just 8 seconds behind 4th.
Now, I need to remind myself not to get too far ahead of this. I still have only finished one triathlon, and failed to complete a second. So really, I should just be looking to finish safely and have fun. If I happen to do well, that is a bonus. This is going to get here quickly in just a little over 2 weeks now.

This was riding angry. "Remember Papio" is what I kept saying to myself. The adjustments of the gears helped quite a bit. I had less saddle soreness today. I'm feeling about the same as I used to with my old bike, where I go much faster in the aero position, but I'm just not comfortable with it for long distances yet.
I need to check on my bike computer. Every once in a while, I'd look over to check my speed, and it would go 22...16...22. One time it said 19...9...19. It seems I may be losing some of the revolutions of the wheel by the magnet passing too far from the sensor. This would obviously decrease my distance travelled and therefore speed. This seems consistent with what I was noticing on the distance travelled, because I thought my route would have been closer to 16.5 miles.
For what it's worth, here are my splits:
10 miles - 27:37
13 miles - 36:21
I'll try not to keep bringing up the 13 mile time, but I wanted to post one to know what to shoot for the next time I do a 13 mile bike course (July 26, 2008).
