Just Do Your Best

December 31
(Time is approx.) This was adventure #2 for the weekend. I rode North on Hwy 1 from Gualala where our vacation house was and was going to cut over to Old Stage Rd on one of the connecting roads and loop back. I didn't get started until after 3pm so I figured I'd head out for 45 minutes and end up back at the house in about 2 hours, before it got dark. At about 35 minutes I passed one of the crossovers and thought, "I'll cut over on the next one." Well, I never saw the next one and ended up in Point Arena (about 14.5 miles). I asked someone in a local cafe where I could cut over and they said it was just up the block but I didn't want to go that way. Apparently it's a high ridge with at least 2 major climbs (that didn't show on the map). So I decided to just turn around and go back down Hwy 1. I got about 5 minutes down the road and decided since that was different from the route I had told my girlfriend, I would go back to town and call her to tell her I was going to change my route. But by that time it was already 4:45 and the sun was setting. So I told her to drive up to get me and I'd meet her out on Hwy 1. Problem: the car keys were in my pocket. I had pulled my helmet out of the trunk when I left and didn't want to walk back up to the house to put the keys back. But there's a spare key in my wallet. I didn't realize there was no ignition kill clicker with the spare key until after she got off the phone to go try it. So I'm waiting on this payphone for her to come back and tell me if it worked. I knew it probably wouldn't. So I'm waiting... waiting. After about 20 minutes, I hung up and headed back. It's now starting to get dark and I'm heading down a 2-lane highway with no lights, no reflectors, and only one reflective pinstripe on my jacket. Other than that I'm wearing black and blue (not very visible). And no shoulder. After riding about 15 minutes (it's getting pretty dark), a truck flashes its headlights at me and pulls over. It's my girlfriend and a neighbor who was kind enough to come pick me up. My girlfriend had locked herself out of the house with no shoes on and had to ask someone in the neighborhood for help. Poor thing. I threw my bike in the back of the truck and we all had a good laugh. I also had a house key on me, so we were soon in front of a warm fire again.
It was a nice ride while it lasted. Beautiful views, rolling hills, some decent small climbs, no rain and temperature in the mid-50's.

On the trainer. I was supposed to do a 2.5-3hr run today, but the weather was really nasty.
