He's gone 'The Distance'. Now what..?

Was planning on a bit more, but it was pointless to crawl behind some runners again. Maybe during the week when the trail is no so crowded.

Strong cross wind in the second half. Also, the legs felt stronger in the second half too. The time reflects the usual traffic, bad pavement, few street crossings etc.

Park duties.

It appears that Trixie was forced out of the race by the medical team after 12:45 and 47 miles ( so was Dean Karnazes after 14:00 and 64 miles among many...).

I'm glad I resisted the urge to set some new PB.
The temp wasn't actually so bad, but still walked 1min every 15min to cool down.
Lots of runners trining for the marathon.

Nutrition: 24oz of Gatorade on the way out and 2x24oz of Gatorade on the way back (all concentrated in the fuel belt). As usual. No other food/gels.

Back home. Wasn't actually so bad, definately not like Badwater.

Talking about Badwater... today is the
Western States 100 (yes, holy shit!). As far as I know out of BT people Trixie is doing it. It seems superhuman to be able to run 100 miles on a mountain trail from hot valleys to snowy peaks many times over. Best of luck to her.

The Western States Endurance Run

The Run is conducted along the Western States Trail starting at Squaw Valley, California, and ending in Auburn, California, a total of 100 miles. The trail ascends from the Squaw Valley floor (elevation 6,200 feet) to Emigrant Pass (elevation 8,750 feet), a climb of 2,550 vertical feet in the first 4½ miles. From the pass, following the original trails used by the gold and silver miners of the 1850’s, runners travel west, climbing another 15,540 feet and descending 22,970 feet before reaching Auburn.

Most of the trail passes through remote and rugged territory, accessible only to hikers, horses and helicopters.

Due to the remoteness and inaccessibility of the trail, the Western States Endurance Run differs substantially from other organized runs. Adequate mental and physical preparation are of utmost importance to each runner, for the mountains, although beautiful, are relentless in their challenge and unforgiving to the ill-prepared.

The Race begins at 5:00 am on Saturday of the last weekend in June at the west end of Squaw Valley. Runners must reach the finish line no later than 11:00 am the following day in order to be eligible for an award.

06:08 Going for a run. This will be like Badwater towards the end, but I'll try to survive.

Walked to the beach near the observatory and back.

I was never a fan of Michael Jackson's, but admired his talent.
This song however always stood out, probably because of Slash, but still:

Pool this time, the sun is just too strong and my neck is burned already. This sunscreen can only protect you so much, specially in the water.

Straight swim. Feeling kind of weak today, maybe it's the heat, but the second 1000m was not easy...

Strength
  • 30m

5 usual sets with 25lbs weights, pushups and squats.

And it's a hot one again... at 6:00am is already 80something!

This was really 2x5kms as we stopped for an hour at the beach and the little one went for a dip in the lake. The beach is exactly at the turning point.
90somethingF, no wind at all, humid. This was HARD!

We all walked to the store and back. It was still hot as hell.

Just as we got back from the beach, the storm is rolling over with massive thunder.

OWS again at Ohio Street beach. This time everything was perfect: water temp, no wind, no waves, no chop. Few people at the end doing the same.
The current must have changed though, coming back is usually quicker, this time was longer by 2min.

Strength

5 sets today. Yeah.

Walk to the park and back home. It is now 91F, sunny and 50% with no wind at all. HOT!

85F, 60% and slight wind. A bit too hot,but it was cooler than during the day.
HR145-155. Even splits.

Strength
  • 18m

3sets.

Just went to replace the rear tube that was patched yesterday and it turns out - the front one is flat as well... I'm getting the hang of the tire changing by now. Still pain in the a$$, but there are some tricks, one of them is lubricating the levers with soap (good luck doing it on the road...), another is hard to explain, but involves some magic and a lot of cursing.
Btw, I noticed my tires are directional! Great, just about time...
