OWS at Lake Pflugerville
Wore the wetsuit but probably shouldn't have as I got a little warm. Swam two of the 1000m laps and 1 500m lap.
Lap 1 (1000M) 23:10
Lap 2 (1000M) 24:30
Lap 3 (500M) 12:55
I have learned that when I do open water swims, I probably swim an extra 2-300m. I zig and I zag and for the life of me cannot keep a straight line, even when sighting often. I definitely plan on getting out to the lake once a week for an OWS if I can.
The waves heading out were smacking me in the head and face. Coming back wasn't as tough. Waves beat me up and I need to get use to it as the swim of IMFL will be full of waves.
I have also been told that swimming across the lake and back is just shy of 1 mile, so hopefully by end of summer and will be swimming back and forth across the lake a few times.
After the OWS, I rode the Lake Pflugerville Tri bike course. I need to do this more often as well. It's not a bad course and has some good false flats and short climbs. It will be good practice for IMFL. Plus, I want to beat my time on the bike course from last year's tri.
Was suppose to go an hour, but needed to get home. And I will be doing an 80 mile bike ride this weekend instead of just a 2 hour ride as my schedule calls for, so I don't feel guilty cutting this ride a little short.

I definitely need to rearrange the order of my workouts. Summer is practically here and running at 4:30 in the afternoon just isn't going to happen much longer. It was in the 90s and extremely humid for this run. I was able to run 35 minutes straight, but I did have to take a few walk breaks the last 25 minutes. Heat, humidity and I don't do well together.
A huge storm blew through during the swim and we got kicked out of the pool due to lightning. At first they said just a 30 minute delay so I waited, but then they said they were closing the pool for the night. Bummer!
500 warmup in 10:50
250 pull buoy in 5:10
100 in drills (1:34, 1:08)
I was really disappointed this swim got cancelled since I missed a swim last week due to the ingrown toenail. I could tell on the warmup that it had been a week since I swam last. I'm hoping the weather holds out and I can get an OWS in on Thursday.

warm up jog to the race start
Local 5k race in very humid condidtions. But, I finally got some hardware!!! I came in 3rd place in the F35-39 age group.
Easy treadmill run.
Since the schedule called for an hour run today, I wanted to get in the full 60 minutes, even if it wasn't all at once.

Some days just aren't your day, and this was NOT my day.
Lots of things happened to make this day be as bad as it was. And part of it started last night at dinner. Having family in town for my son's confirmation, I knew we would go out to eat. They wanted Mexican food. I know that dosn't work for me the day before a long run or ride, but what do you do. I just hoped I'd be ok.
Saturday morning a friend picked me up and we drove out to Blanco. It was a nice morning when we left. When we got to Blanco, it was overcast and the wind had picked up. I checked weather.com and saw the winds were already at 13mph.
Getting ready, I went to put my Garmin on and it was dead. I had charged it last night, but sometimes when I charge it and take it off the charger, it is "on". I guess that's what happened and then sitting overnight it ran the battery back down. So, this ride would be without HR info.
We originally planned to do the 80 mile route, but things quickly changed. This course is VERY hilly, which I knew. But I didn't count on the wind in addition to the hills. Normally I can average 15-16 mph on a long course. Today, well you can see the average above. I would go 5-6 mph up the hill and then 30+ on the other side going down. I haven't trained much on hills this year and it showed today.
Knowing I had to be back by a certain time, we made the decision to cut down to the 65 mile course. This helped, but as the day went on, I got beat up more and more.
Last year, I crashed during a ride. I had a blow out, but it was a very windy day and mentally, I still feel like that was part of it. My bike and I together weigh less than 150 and I get blown around a lot in wind. As the day went on, the wind picked up. There were two points in the ride where I literally almost got blown over due to wind gusts. One of those was while going 30mph downhill. Mentally, I couldn't take it anymore. It wasn't worth the risk to me to possibly crash and ruin IMFL. So at the aid station right around mile 50 I decided I was done and had them call sag.
It was a tough decision and took me a long time to make that call, but ultimately for me on this day, it was the right call. My training schedule only called for a 2 hour bike ride, so I was well over that. And it was a very tough ride. Plus, I checked weather.com on the way back in the sag car and the winds were up to 17mph, which meant gusts of probably 20-25. I was very disappointed in myself for not finishing, but I'm ok with it now, looking back.
Now I just need to figure out how to deal with wind better and how to mentally get past those images of me crashing due to wind blowing me over.
