PA Grand Canyon Marathon. This was very tough. I was definitely not trained for a marathon. It was also very hilly, including long slow ups and downs. My plan of doing a 6/6 went out the window when I started experiencing the course. I switched to running all the downs and flats (not much flat) and walking the ups. I started to get cramps at mile 18, which continued to the end. I should have brought my handheld, which I decided not to do at 4am (bad decision). I also decided to wear my road shoes, instead of my trail shoes (another bad decision). The "trail" was mostly gravel, with large stones. My feet hurt at the end. The time cutoff was 6 hours, but they were kind enough to count everybody, regardless of the finish time. I was so worried the sweeper car was coming to get me those last 17 minutes. I had my speech all ready about not getting in the car! I was so upset, relieved and drained when I crossed the finish that I cried! This was a mental victory and good learning experience!
