This is What We Do

Saturday - July 23

All signed up for Ironman Lake Placid 2012!!! Had a good run yesterday. Kids went bungie jumping yesterday and played mini golf. We have a kitchenette unit this year, that I already reserved for next year!, and getting here early in the week has made everything less stressful and more relaxing. The volunteers and local residents have been so welcoming and hospitable. I've really been able to soak it all in and I can't wait for tomorrow. Thanks to ALL my BT friends for the awesome inspires!!!

1-loop of Mirror Lake. Water was choppy. Felt OK. Both shoulders a little heavy.

Through downtown LP to start of Keene descent, turned around and went down to River Road, climbed the Cherries and the Bears. Felt really good.

Yeah, the climb to the Keene descent is much tougher than the Cherry's and the Bears. Met a really nice guy Jeff on River Rd and chatted a bunch. It's his 4th time doing LP!

Up in beautiful Lake Placid. Forgot just how terrible cell phone reception is here. Going down to the expo and to swim a lap in Mirror Lake. Short run later too. Hopefully the body will cooperate today!!

Another day, another terrible workout. Was supposed to be a 5-miler - which for me is a walk in the park - but my legs were heavy and stiff. My right achilles was also really tight, and my achilles NEVER bother me. I'm stopping the anitbiotics till after my race.

Tuesday - July 19

Swim
  • 28m 31s
  • 1320.00 meters
  • 02m 10s /100 meters

Wildwood Lake. Swam alongside Mike (mscotthall) to see how his shoulder would feel in a wetsuit. Was happy to see that Mike was able to swim despite the injury and HE WILL BE AN IRONMAN this Sunday :)

Bike
  • 20m 02s
  • 5.84 miles

Trainer. Felt absolutely terrible. Quads burned. Was supposed to do 45 minutes. Was 90 degrees in my garage, and I'd been up for 15 hours so I threw in the towel halfway through/

Northhampton Hills

Felt good on the Run. Swam and Ran with Derrick and Rick. I'm not going to see those guys for about 3 weeks now. Going to miss training with them. Training partners make training so much better.

I am taking two FULL Rest days this week and all my efforts will be 20 to 45 minutes. Tapering HARD this week. :)

So I went to the urologist and I have a urinary tract infection.  I've gotten this before when my run mileage goes toward 50 miles per week.  I've also been gotten off my Bike and made the mistake of checking my work e-mail before showering, and I end up getting caught up doing some work while still in my yucky shorts. Moral of the Story: take a shower right after you get off the Bike!  My urologist prescribed me Cipro.  I pulled out the bottle and along with it a page-long warning on TENDON RUPTURE.  Really!?  I went onto Runners World forum and college-age kids to 60-year-olds report getting achilles tendonitis while taking Cipro. So I had my other Doctor friend prescribe me Bactrim instead. The worst case side effect of Bactrim (and any antibiotic) is gastrointestinal distress; which is my biggest worry cause if I have GI issues at Lake Placid, it's gonna be a lonnng day.  So my Doc friend prescribed a high dose Bactrim, twice a day, and I'm hoping 5-days on it will tame the infection enough so I can allow a couple days of probiotics to reinfest my gut with my natural flora and thus (hopefully) avoid GI issues on Race Day.

I want to complain and get down about this, but I can't.  Not after seeing what happened to Dan (docswim).  Not after seeing some of the carnage in the LP thread.  After my friend Mike getting a concussion and hurting his shoulder.  Not after last year having to DNS cause I couldn't ride the Bike at all.  I just need to HTFU and thank my lucky stars this is the only negative I have to deal with before the race.

The statement: Getting to the Ironman starting line healthy is the hardest part is the most underrated statement in the history of all athletic statements.
