Good race to be a guy - about 500 guys and over 1000 ladies. Chicks dig the chocolate.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st annual Hot Chocolate 15k/5k presented by Hershey's and RAM (Running Away Mutlisport) Racing.

Beautiful morning on the Lake front. Montrose Harbor to be exact. I thought this would be a smallish race since it was an inaugural but I should never underestimate the lure of chocolate. I don't have the numbers yet but there was a sizable crowd and registration was maxed. The one thing that I like about Running Away events is that they seem very organized, the route is clearly marked, (although I'll get to that in a second) and they have a great race announcer who is constantly giving you updates and direction (if people would take out their ear buds and pay attention) - I can't remember his name but I know him as the voice of Pleasant Prairie Triathlon.

I'm vamping here so let me get to it.

I had a really, really good day. I've never run a 15K as a race. Given my current training I pretty much nailed it. Although results aren't up my chip time was 59:44 for a 6:25 pace. I finished 28th overall (26th male and 6th AG). Funny thing if you look at my splits I think I ran a faster 5k within this race than either of my last 5k races. Weird. I settled in right at the beginning and just rocked it. The course was a little odd though and there was some strong winds coming in right off the lake. We were supposed to run a north/south/north route from Montrose to Foster down to North Ave then back to Montrose. But we were all over the place - sometimes on the path and sometimes through parking lots and up onto the grass. It was like they were drunk or it was really dark when they put the cones out this morning. Ended up doing a lot of east-west zigzagging and the course turned back on itself too many times to remember.

All in all a good race and one that I would certainly do again. Lots of AG prizes and there was a ton of chocolate - hot chocolate (very tasty and hot - surprisingly given the numbers), massive amounts of this chocolate fondue s'mores stuff and plenty of snack-sized Hershey's everything from Kisses, to Reeses to Twizzlers and Kit-Kats.

Although I feel guilty for not riding on what starting out as a beautiful morning I took BP permission and advice and slept in. Ahhh that was nice.

Got instructions to cut back on my 400s and watch this one. Gave myself extra rest and did this at night while the freak show that is Halloween was happening in the neighborhood around the track.

Boy howdy legs are dead. No life. I hope they are ok cause I felt very abusive toward them today. I assume they'll get back at me at some point when I get up from my desk and they collapse and my noodle clips the edge of my desk. Not a very symbiotic relationship, my legs and I. Just an ok run. Felt really flat.

Didn't have good hop last night. Second 400 beat me up every interval. I haven't done the math but I don't think I finished any of these at my goal interval pace. And that first one was just slow. No excuse. Maybe it was the 56 bpm HR.

October 27

Rest day. Need to go back and put in my stats from yesterday's race. Another disappointment. Expected to rock and completely under executed. I hate 5ks. I don't know why I do them.

Good seeing lots of friendly though. And fun having people over for breakfast after the race.
