it has reached a stage where i feel the need to purchase/invest in some gear.

i have looked at a couple of packages, triuk and sbr, and was wondering if there was any alternatives or words of advice from the residents sages.

so come on , heads together, what is the best starting package that can be put together?

First thing for me is a new pair of running shoes.

I have an old race bike I used to ride 20 years ago that I'm going to see about getting refurbished, depends if it's economically viable or not, I shall be training on heavy ATBs.

The big expense for me is likely to be the wetsuit, I'm not going to buy one until I've lost a lot of weight and I'm thinking of hiring one for May.

There are a load of places out there for gear though.

All Terrain Bike, it's a Giant Oversize Alu with suspension and knobblies.

Weighs a ton compared to my race bike.

cheers glenn, i will try to keep up.

do you reccomend traing on a heavier bike, or is just a necessity until your race bike is up to scratch?

Hehe, I don't think I'm in a position to recommend anything.

My own Point of View is that it can't hurt to train for a bit on a heavier bike but at some point you just have to put the miles on the actual bike you're going to race.

You'll need to make sure it's comfortable and fits you properly, Race Day would be a very bad day to tweak the saddle height.

To be honest I think if my race bike were ready I'd be riding it so much you'd think I was attached to it.

what "equipment" I have got has mostly come from
bargain bins
or wiggle.co.uk
I bought a wetsuit from a boat yard
I bought a "technical" shirt in Manchester Trafford Centre for £4
[it was a Man City football shirt and I was told
that I should not wear it until I got home...]
my bike was my brother-in-laws, cost me £100 to service
[I must learn to repair it myself]

one piece of equipment we need for the running shoes
are elastic laces for £5
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/?ReferID=googwig&gclid=CLev9vD724kCFQVOEAodWBDa4g
and I've been told they last forever

I don't like to recommend any company over another that I haven't used
but I find wiggle good
I was unsure about what size tri-suit I'd need
I ordered two sizes, and got creditted for the one I returned - no problem
oh, and they sell tri starter kits - but even they are out of my price range

this is triathlon on a shoe-string [an elastic shoe-string]
