Subject: Best tires for the money?
I've got 1,300 miles on my tires and the flat patch on the back tire is clearly my signal for new ones. I've searched the forums a bit but haven't found what I'm looking for so here goes.

Where do I need to look on my rims to find the dismensions (mainly width, I believe the 700mm is standard on most bike sizes) so I get the proper tire? I've read about 700x18-23 and the 18-23 is the range of width I need to pay attention to when buying the tires. I have a pretty stock 2008 P2SL w/Ultegra. The rims I believe are shimano.

Anyway, I want to get the best tire I can afford and the proper size so I'm starting from scratch here. As for what I'm starting with, a buddy recommended to me what he rode on this past season which are Vredestein Fortezza TriComp's. Searching the forums it seems like the Michelin P2 or P3's are pretty popular and vary in price from upper $30's to lower $40's. The Vredestein Fortezza's are around $48 or $49 from what I found.

Any and all suggestions on what and where to find the info on my rims to get the right size and then the best tires for the value is appreciated...

Thanks.

The most common size is 700 X 23. That will work on the rims you have without a problem.

As for tire selection.

The Michelin P2 or P3 are excellent tires as are the TriComps. You also might want to consider Conti 4000s. Biketiredirect.com usually has some good prices as do some other discount sites. My LBS matches the prices most of the time so I usually get them from him. May want to check with your LBS to see if you can work out something. I have had very good experience with the Conti 4000s. I replaced the rear tire at 3500 miles before my "A" race just to play it safe, but saved it to use on my trainer this winter. The front has over 4000 miles on it. One flat on the rear in the 3500 miles and none on the front. That may be just as much luck has quality of the tire.

I love continental tires. On all of my sets of "conte's" I have gotton 1,000 plus miles with minimal flats. I just did IMKY with "Continental Race Ready" tires, they are real fast (or seem to be) no complaints.

This is my first year of anything organized in cycling but I read a lot

Unless you special ordered a 650 wheelset, your are 700c.

The two tires I see as constantly recommended for flat avoidance and good traction are Continental GP4000 and michelin pro3 race. If you happen to run across a couple of pro2 race tires for half price I wouldn't turn those down either.

Just what I've seen after looking for exactly what you're starting to look for

For about $25-$30 each I'd recommend the Hutchinson Fusion Comps or Vittoria Rubino Pro Slicks

The Vittoria Rubino Pro's are what came with my bike and I have no complaints. However I did experience five or six flats this season, perhaps unrelated to the tire.

So is there a minimum and maximum I should spend on whatever tires I purchase?
