Subject: Gatorade - waste of money?

I see lots of folks (mostly college-age males) buying cartons or gallons of gatorade at the store. Often times, its virtually their entire purchase.

I'm not convinced that it's any better than water. Those that argue that there are "electrolytes" in there might not realize that you can get all those electrolytes and them some with a few bites of any food or worse comes to worse a salt tab or vitamin.

 Any thoughts?

For me, Gatorade goes down a lot easier than water does during/after a workout.  Worth it for me to be able to drink something that I won't puke up after a hard workout.  (I have had that happen with straight water...)

You can get the same effect of Gatorade by sitting at your house and drinking a cup of water and then pouring a handful of sugar down your throat, and then injecting in your veins whatever other random additives and color dyes you can locate that are also found in it.  Keep it simple dude.

Um, let's go with 'no' for 200, bob. Great suggestion, though...lots of merit here.

Yes, gatorade has value. It's not black or white, though...compared to water, yes, it has value, if for no other reason than the salt in it. That's firsthand experience, backed up by a gajillion pages of research. The calories and nutrients will clearly allow you to perform longer and more intensely than if you're just water-fueled.

Compared to other nutrition, though, it's gray. Infinit, spiz, powerade, lavasalts, gels, whatever all have something to contribute to the longer-distance triathlete's nutrition needs. They will help, that's documented. Which ones, and how much they help for your particular physiology, well, that's up to you.

The reason college age males are buying Gatoraid is because it is great for a hangover!!  Laughing  Nothing goes down easier when you head is spinning and you are dehydrated!

I still prefer it, but well diluted.  I but the crystals and mix my own to save $.  Motor tabs and Cytomax make me crampy for some reason, but I tolerate watery gatorade just fine.

If you are trying to sell me on the point of Gatorade being somehow good for you, I'm not buyin it.  Ok it has sodium in it, which endurance athletes need, so does chocolate cake.  Doesn't mean I'm going to pound a slice of cake when I'm out for a long run.  You can responsibly replace the lost sodium, electrolytes, carbs, etc. without all the garbage that comes with Gatorade.

I think that you should go and do a 3 hour bike ride on nothing but water and let us know how it goes

x2. Buy the crystals, save dough and control how much sugar you're pumping into your system.

I can't do a super long ride/run without some Gatorade, though also diluted. I agree it has way more sugar in it than you need, but water it down and it'll effectively fuel you through some pretty grueling workouts.

I like Gatorade Endurance.

my stomach tolerates it well and it keeps me hydrated.... and it's often on the course, so I don't have to carry hydration with me.

to the OP: are you anti-Gatorade specifically, or are you anti sports drinks?

What are you taking in for calories that are better than gatorade? Most gels are the same type of sugar as well as most other sports drinks. I believe when you are working out for extended amounts of time it is all about the calories. Many of the original triathletes would eat fig newtons and candy bars to get their nutrition. Those are not "healthy" sources but you need something easy and quick. If you read the backs of most of the energy bars they are the same as the sport drinks. Loaded with sugar. That is where you get your carbs from for the workout. I personally like the Hammer Nutrition products better. They have a higher quality carbohydrate than the vast majority of the other products. I am interested to see what you are drinking/eating.

You have an interesting point there!   I work in a psychiatric hospital and we give our drug/ alcohol withdrawl patients gatorade.  Works like a charm!

Moabrunner, when I am going on a 2-4 hour continuous workout, my main focus is utilizing carbs for energy.  I don't want my tank overloaded with simple sugars.  On a 3-4 hour bike ride I will take 3 bottles mixed with various amounts of Carbo-Pro and Perpetuem, and split 1 1/2 Nuun tablets between all 3 bottles.  My metabolism is something fierce, so I need 1,000+ on the ride.  The C-P and Perpetuem has all the calories I need, loads of carbs to keep the tank full, sodium to prevent dehydration and with minimal sugar, and the 1 1/2 Nuun tablets for electrolytes (plus I just really like em).  I can pack about 11-1200 calories in 3 bottles and get away with about 15-20 total grams of sugar.  You will find roughly that in 1 single serving of Gatorade, and one single bottle of Gatorade has like 2.5-? depending on the size. All I can attest for is what works for me, but I just can't advocate the use of Gatorade as this awesome tool of endurance.

Simple sugars are ideal for workout nutrition.  Not sure why the myth of sugar being evil gets perpetuated.

I use Gatorade Endurance in powder, mix it muself and use it for long workouts. Why? Because it does the job and it's on the course. I never drink it unless I am training or racing.

Original Lemon/Lime Gatorade, powder, in the biiig can from CostCo...doesn't have HFCS in it, and waaay cheaper than paying for all the packaging.

I won't swim >30' without it to sip on, and certainly would not attempt a long cycle (2-3hr) unless at least one bottle is Gatorade.  I keep hearing about G2, and nuun, but haven't gotten to try them yet. Definitely enjoyed Hammer gel, am currently testing Clif gels/blocks.

I think as long as you are getting some calories in your system and are staying hydrated, use whatever works for you.
I personally hate Gatorade.. it makes me want to puke. Ditto on Cytomax.
I have been using Hammer Heed products for several years now and have had great success with the gels and the drink mixes.
Any rides over 2 hours and I have to have some calories going in.

why so angry about this??? He's just asking for advice.

Ive used it training and competing for 12 yrs, quite succesfully. I water it down, always stay well hydrated (a little flavor keeps you drinking) and get the right amt of calories. No, I do not do IM but I do halfs.

Some more of your comments on what you use...awesome that you can and do use all of those products. Not every athlete can afford all of those, and still have race funds. I keep it simple, even though I COULD buy more. (yes there are some other products I do use, but my mainstay is gatorade and gels)

That post wasn't directed at the OP.  It was directed at somebody who chose to condescend to me in an very unnecessary way.  I am very laid back around here, but when I get talked to like that my natural response is to wonder how many posts does somebody have to make on an internet message board before they get some respect =).
