I noticed many years ago that my long bike rides ended much better when I drank Gatorade instead of water. Now, I buy powder in the big can to avoid the corn syrup during training season and switch to HEED for racing.

I like Gatorade for training.  It's easy to get extra bottles from a gas station if I run out during a long bike ride.  Sometimes it does annoy my stomach and then I switch to something else.  But I don't think it's that evil.  You do need some amount of calories during long workouts.

It's also really good if you are hungover or have a stomach bug.

Anyone else think that Jon311024 had a bad experience with Gatorade as a child?

As some have mentioned, I just don't like the taste of plain water. If it weren't for something with flavor in it I wouldn't drink enough. Gatorade just goes down easier. G2 orange is pretty good. G2 fruit punch reminds me a bit of cough syrup and the grape...well, has there ever been anything grape flavored that has ever tasted good?

Nooooooo no bad experiences with Gatorade.  I just go by what I know.  And yes companies like  Gatorade and Powerade have brilliant marketing campaigns, and I know every triathlete on this website can recall the Chris Legh Gatorade commercial.  And yes you are all right that Gatorade will be around for many more years to come, but guess what, so will McDonalds.

Bottom line is that everybody is different, so from what I have gathered, you like the Gatorade because it has calories, you like it because it does not taste like water, and you like the taste when you're hungover.  If this regiment works for you in training and in racing, great!  All you have to do is keep doing what you are doing, and I will keep doing what I'm doing.  I'm done! Good day =)

I see lots of folks (mostly college-age males) buying cartons or gallons of gatorade at the store. Often times, its virtually their entire purchase.

I'm not convinced that it's any better than water. Those that argue that there are "electrolytes" in there might not realize that you can get all those electrolytes and them some with a few bites of any food or worse comes to worse a salt tab or vitamin.

 Any thoughts?

how many calories are in water?  I'm pretty sure it's zero.  Gatorade was little benefit over water during sub 1 hour workouts....once you are over 1.5-2 hours, the calories can be good

FWIW, the poster does mention getting calories another way.

understood.  I was simple pointing out it is very different than water.
