I don't do it, but I also feel that if I have to pee after the swim, then I over-hydrated a little anyway.  If I thought I was on the bubble to KQ, then I wouldn't hesitate.  It doesn't bother me if others do, either.

Like some others said, it can get much worse.  This guy passed me during the run at IMFL in 2010:

And, yes, I did smell him before I saw him, and from what I've heard, he did KQ that day.

x2

Last IM I did was very hot and I still only went once during the swim and once during T2.  No reason to go on the bike, make other riders mad, etc.

I didn't sprint the last 100 yards to the finish either..  I'm finishing in 12 something - do a few seconds matter?  No.

I spend that money so I have time to go to the bathroom.

Thanks not the only thing that got passed!

After this happened we were having a triathlon club happy hour and the discussion was "Would you poop yourself for a Kona slot?" The consensus was absolutely, every one of us would.

None of us would have done that for a BQ, thus reinforcing the fact that KQ>>BQ,

I have read on here a couple of times about people peeing while on the bike.  Is this for real?  I understand being hard core and all, but to some one new to tri's and biking, people really do this?  If so, this just brings up all kinds of questions for me...like, can you really not stop and go on the side of the road, or wait till you hit a gas station?  How the Hell do you get the smell out of the shorts?  Doesn't it go down your leg?  Does the padding in your shorts start to feel like a diaper?  Some one please fill me in on this...I am oddly intrigued!

Yep, they do it. That's why volunteers who do bike catching at Ironman distance races wear gloves.

I think I'm weird, because I can ride for 100 miles, and pee once. Even then I don't HAVE to. It's odd. So I will never get desperate enough to even consider peeing on my bike. Even then, I'd take a bush over my bike. I love my bike too much and I honestly don't want pee on me either.

Exactly!  Wow, this has been enlightening for a tri newbie

I'm telling you, I have seen some pretty weird crap in the marathons I have run, why did I think it wouldn't exist in Tri?  Yeah, I think bike catching will be the last thing I sign up for as a tri volunteer!

It's a tough question. For me, I Am not a KQ or prize money contender and my ego wouldn't afford it, so no way. Now, if my last name was McCormick or Armstrong, it would be a different discussion...

I said I never would, but found myself doing it at IM Louisville last year. From my race report:

OK now I had to pee again, pretty bad (yay for being hydrated!). It was all I could think about, and there just hadn't been that many porta potties on the course at all! It got to be almost painful, and I was looking for somewhere to stop on the side of the road but everything was open with no big trees or bushes nearby. Finally I decided I could try to pee on my bike. This was a big mental step for me - something I said I'd never do. But here I was, standing up on a downhill, trying really hard to relax. On about the 5th try, it happened. Not a lot because I had to sit back down to pedal, but enough to get a little relief. Gross, but so necessary at that point.

I did it in my last HIM.  Was having a great race and didn't want to hop off.  Took me a looooong time to do it the first time.  After that...not a problem.

I peed on the bike for the first time last weekend at IM California. I strategically waited till right after an aid station and grabbed an extra water bottle to wash my leg off with after I was done.

The dangers of this practice.

An option other than peeing on yourself: Hop off your bike. Sit on the grass and release.  No need to pull your shorts down. Sit still and you will get minimal mess.

Yup.

If you spent a year training for a big race and a bunch of money to save a minute or two it doesn't make sense to stop and lose 90-120 seconds urinating when you can do it on a descent at full speed on the bike.

Men can pee over the top of their shorts or just go in their tri suit. At the next aid station in a long race just dump a water bottle into your lap to rinse the urine out of your trisuit. Women can just pee in their trisuit on the bike standing up.

One note, mostly for girls (guys can pee to the side): don't pee on the top of your water bottle. You're drinking from that. Pull your bottle out first and hold it in your teeth while you pee.

And finally, this is the reason why rental wetsuits have never made sense to me. What is the first thing a nervous triathlete does when they get in waist-deep cold water in a wetsuit?

Now, peeing while running at a 6:30 pace? That takes practice. But practice makes perfect. I used to say you spent the first two and half years of your life learning how to not pee your pants, then when you become an endurance athlete it's a skill you have to re-learn.

Just a bit of advice... if you are traveling by car to a race, and pee on the bike....  don't throw your shoes in a bag afterward thinking "I'll get to them eventually after some food and a couple beers," sleep overnight, and drive 5 hours home in warm temps.

Still trying to figure out how to get the smell out of my running shoes... Fortunately I'm about to retire that pair.

You should warn people when you post that thread.

I admit to peeing on the bike during a race.  There was no place to go and I couldn't hold it anymore.  It wasn't even a conscious decision at that point; my body decided for me.

I've peed while riding my bike, but not on my bike. While on steady downhill, arrange apparatus in a downward and rightward direction, unclip right foot, extend right leg slightly out and back. Pee. Douse with water. Re clip.

I'd try a wash/soak in a solution of something like "Nature's Miracle", or another enzyme-based deodorant. If it works for cat urine, human pee should be no problem!
