Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30am. Loaded the truck with my bike and bag. Went to have my banana but it was mostly brown and since I forgot to pack my peanut butter to have with it, I tossed it. Didn't have any hot water handy to make my oatmeal, so my youngest son and I took a trip to Dunkins. I had a plan bagel with a little cream cheese, bottled water and a few sips of gatorade. Woke up hubby and he dropped me off at the beach around 6:10.
Event warmup:

Not much time for a warm up since the bathroom line took so long. I did manage to take a quick dip in the water to see how it felt. Ended up helping out a woman who showed up a little late. She didn't have her body glide or ear plugs. I had new silicon ear plugs that weren't used so I gave her two and let her use my body glide. Also took a picture of her and her hubby and they took a picture of me (she said she was going to email it to me, so we'll see).

Comments:

Was nervous about going in to this swim. Once in the water I found I couldn't put my face (had a hard time catching my breath). Managed to keep moving forward with keeping my head up while doing FS. Also did side stroke when I started feeling tired. About 3/4 of the way in to the swim it felt like my asthma wanted to bother me, but I told myself to not think about it and to just keep moving forward (it worked,,, no asthma attack). Managed to run more then I expected once out of the water and on the sand.
Was happy to see that I passed a couple of swimmers,,, but that soon passed when the people in the wave after me came flying by me in the water. LOL.
What would you do differently?:

Trained more.
Get more swimming lessons. Do more OWS and do some of thos ows in the ocean to get use to the salt water.

Comments:

Enjoyed my ride despite getting trapped a couple of times. Right hand/arm keeps going numb. Like riding when the roads are blocked off since it makes me relax more.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time training on my bike so my shifting would have gone better and I would have been better conditioned for the ride.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 34m 45s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 09m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt tired during the first 2 miles. I told myself "slow and steady finishes the race", so that was my focus,,, just keep moving, even if it was slow. Took about a 15 second walking break at a water stop. Legs felt better during the last 1 1/2mile.
What would you do differently?:

Trained more.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, got a massage. Had a gatorade and 1/2 a powerbar. Light stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of consistant training leading up to this race. Making sure I don't re-injure hamstring that has been bothering me since Aug 2008.

Event comments:

Really a nice race. Was also a nice weekend away with my family. Would most likely consider doing this race again.

Course: Nice course. Got stuck behind a few riders who where trapped behind a car that was taking up at the bottom of a down hill (grrr!). The section where the course was brought down to a 1 lane. Got stuck behind a few riders during most the uphill since they were stuck behind someone going very slow up the hill.

Course: Nice course. Seemed like it was mainly small uphills on the way out and nice downhills during the end. Run on sand for the final stretch was interesting. Nothing like making you use up that saved up energy for the home stretch.
