Pre-race routine:

I almost feel embarrassed to post my race report after I read everyone else's... but hey, it's my first tri ever. Finishing was the ultimate goal. I'm signed up for the entire series, so I can only get better from here!!!

My husband and I drove down from Weston so I could go to the First Timers Clinic at Mack Cycle Saturday morning and to stay in Coral Gables for the night so we wouldn't have to wake up as early. He plays for the Miami Dolphins, so I'm used to going to games and supporting HIM, so this was a serious role-reversal situation for us!!! I've done 5k, 10k, etc. before, but nothing like this. :) We relaxed on Saturday (well, my husband relaxed... I was ANXIOUS all day)... and I attempted to get a good nights rest before the race. We ate Subway for lunch and Cheesecake Factory for dinner (I had Chicken Teryaki and rice and thought it was best to skip the cheesecake this time around! LOL).

In the morning I usually keep breakfast very light as to not upset my stomach any more than it already is, so I just ate a package of peanut butter crackers and a bottle of G2. I meant to take Endurolytes but I forgot them. :(

We got to the race area VERY EARLY. We were there about 530am. I wanted to get there super early, not only to get a good spot on the rack, but to get my bearings. Being my first time, I basically had no idea what was about to happen. :)

The very first thing I did was find my bike rack. Since I went to Mack Cycle to pick up my packet the first day they were available, I was in the very first row (I had bib #80). I plan to do the same thing next time. Being right on the concrete path was awesome. I semi-set up my transition area just to secure my spot. I had to go find some BUG SPRAY (nobody warned me about the FLESH EATING CREATURES that lurk in the grass in the wee hours of the morning). I have bug bites ALL OVER... and I do mean ALL OVER. LOL.... I also had to find some way to secure my bike number to my bike, as the adhesive was on the WRONG SIDE of the number!!!! Did anyone else have this problem??!?!?!? They ended up stapling it for me. I got body marked, picked up my chip, then went to the transition area to finish setting up my stuff. I went through the transitions in my head and knew I was ready. I went down to the beach to sit and talk with my husband before the race started. Went to the bathroom about a bazillion times... then it was finally time to head to the start. When I saw how far the distance was from the swim exit back to transition.... I started freaking out a little bit. But what can you do at that point but just buckle down and get through it??? I watched all the waves before me go out, and then it was my turn...... Females 39 and under... pink caps!

Comments:

This was honestly about how I thought I would do on the swim time-wise. I started WAYYY outside and took my time getting into the water. I had been warned about the madness that ensues in the swim portion, and I wanted to stay far away from that, being my first open water swim in competition. Even with all my precautions, this chick in front of me was kicking on top of the water... which wasn't doing me, or HER for that matter, any good at all!!! I finally got around her and all was well. I was having trouble keeping my head in the water because it was more murky than I envisioned... and for some reason that had me a little freaked out. That and I have a love-hate relationship with salt water. It's easier to swim in because you are obviously more buoyant, but salt water grosses me out. Big time. I was a little too focused on not getting any in my mouth... yeah right... like that's unavoidable. I grew up around lakes... so it's just taking me a while to get used to it.
What would you do differently?:

Practice makes perfect... just need to be a little more confident.
Transition 1

Comments:

OK.... I thought I was running a LOT FASTER than I actually was in the sand. LOL... maybe I need to do a little more sand running between now and the next race. :p

Once I got into the transition area, it was smooth sailing. Glasses and helmet got put on while I was rinsing/drying my feet. I slipped my shoes on in transition and just buckled the top buckle and did the rest when I got onto the bike.

What would you do differently?:

RUN FASTER. :) .... and MAYBE try to go without socks.
Bike

Comments:

Bike portion went pretty well... just need to work on getting a little faster and knocking a minute or two off next time. First hill was difficult because of wind, but second hill wasn't as bad... LOVED coasting and used the opportunity to stretch my legs. :)

Felt a little eerie to ride past the accident scene where the rider was hit by a car. :(
What would you do differently?:

GO FASTER!!!! :)
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

Kicked butt in the second transition. Came in 260 overall. :) I was pissed at the guy next to me on the rack, he didn't leave me any room for my bike on the end of the rack!!! Grrrrr...

Comments:

SOOOOO HOT. Period. I was just trying to keep focused... Keep running... Don't stop!!!! Somehow I got passed by three people in my age group during this run... but I don't know how because I was checking everyone's calves as they ran by but nobody from my age group!!! Hmmm.... oh well. Definitely felt like the longest 5k EVER. I was getting grossed out at the smells of charcoal and BBQ going on along the beach. Not what I want to smell while I'm gasping for air. LOL

My husband was waiting for me around .25 before the finish line. He was running along the side and saying "better not let me pass you!!!!" which was definitely motivation for that last sprint to bring me in just under 1:20. Yayyy for motivators!!!
What would you do differently?:

Train more later in the morning (even though it sucks). I'm used to getting up before the sun to get my runs in. Although the sleeping in part I can get used to! :p
Post race
Warm down:

Drank HEED thinking it was going to be water... YUCK!!!!! Not a good surprise. Poured water on my head then went to get oranges and COOKIES. :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat. Inexperience. Anxiety. Will do better next time!!!

Event comments:

If it weren't for the long run in the sand, I would rate it a 5. Then again, it's my first race so I don't have much to compare it to!
