Pre-race routine:

Went to Aunt's house in Wildwood the night before. Up at 5 at on-site at 6:15. Picked up packet and setup transition.
Event warmup:

Jumped in the ocean and swam about 100 yds total. Water not nearly as cold as last year.
Swim
  • 10m 39s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

did the race the year before and the swim seemed crazy easy - not the case this year - tough getting out to the first flag. I was happy with the way I fought thru it and finished pretty good. Thought about Mike Tyson quote "everyone's got a plan til they get hit" - I guess I got hit but kept pluggin'. Long run (200yd+) to T1 padded time - I was out of the water in @8:15 - even though I was targeting @7 minute swim I felt ok considering the conditions.
What would you do differently?:

swim more - hadn't swum in over two weeks prior other than jumping in backyard pool for a wetsuit test. The ease of last year's swim gave me a false sense of security that obvioulsy was not justified.
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

good for me but I have to find a way to cut my t-times.
Bike
  • 24m 18s
  • 8.3 miles
  • 20.49 mile/hr
Comments:

felt like I did OK - one open section of the road was windy on the way back but nothing too bad. They shortened the course from 12 to 8 which was a little disappointing. I was targeting 20mph and hit the mark so I am pleased with that. Looking at the other times I need to set my sights a little higher.
What would you do differently?:

the proverbial bike more - don't think I would have hit 20 mph if the leg was still 12 miles - need to crank it up for July 3rd race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

pretty disappointed in this - I am usually in the 40-50 second range - I just lost focused and slowed down - not even sure where?
What would you do differently?:

practice and act like the clock is still running.
Run
  • 25m 1s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

After the short bike and the move of the leg from the beach to road I felt like I needed to put up a good number - this for me was the best run leg for any sprint I have done. I train pretty slow so I was happy with this result. Legs felt good and I negative split'd the run.
Post race
Warm down:

on the beach with son Michael who came down with Brent's family to watch his first tri.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I actually feel like I performed to my training level.

Event comments:

the shortened course was a bummer as I would have liked to compare against last year - just didn't seem right that time on bike is shorter than the run. Fastest bike and run splits in a sprint are kind of hollow accomplishments at that bike distance but it's always fun to race and certianly a good cause especially on Memorial Day Weekend.
