Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:10. Got dressed. Put on BT Tattoo, Body glide, etc. Took 2 water bottles, 2 bottles for the fuel belt and 2 24 oz bottles for the bike filled with Gatorade put them in cooler. I made a Peanut Butter and Jelly on wheat toast and took it with me.I like to eat around 2 hours before the race. It gives my always sour stomach time to digest and keeps me from getting hungry just before we start. Left the house at 4:55

Drove over to Transition at 79th ST at 5:20. Ran into Michael.Pumped up my tires, set up my area, grabbed my Wetsuit, goggles and cap, and then drove up to the swim start to get my chip. Ate my PB&J and drank some Gatorade. Watched the Pros start, picked up my Chip, ran into Earl.

The plan was to drive back down to 79th have breakfast and sit in a diner but instead That PB&J ran right thru me so I hit the port a johns.

We drove back down and left the car on 72 St then walked back up to the swim start.
Event warmup:

Walked about a mile to the swim start did some stretching, got some words of encouragement from Earl, waited til 7:45 then put my wetsuit on. Even though I swam in it on Friday and soaked it Saturday night it was still Tight-as-a-Mutha-F%^&*.

Comments:

We jumped in and held onto a rope waiting for the gun. The current was nice and strong. I was feeling fine right up until I started swimming. Suddenly, I couldn't breathe. I felt like my westuit was too tight and after a few minutes of being in the water I had a freakin' panic attack. I went to reach for the zipper of my wetsuit so that I could rip it off and breathe and then realized that I swim and float as gracefully as a cinderblock without the wetsuit so I flipped onto my back and talked myself into calming down and breathing. Luckily it worked and I was able to flip back over and finish the swim. I swam into something large , grey and slimy and it is hard to describe the muck at the bottom of the Hudson. I scooped up many handfuls of it as I approached the exit. Did I mention how nasty the water tasted? I was tasting it up until Dinner time

Thank God for that current. I finished in 27:08. Almost 40 minutes faster than my tim in St Anthony's and 13 minutes fatser than I have ever done it in a pool.

What would you do differently?:

I need to do more open water swimming and I need to practice in a 50 meter pool. Bottom line is I need to "SWIM LOTS"
Transition 1
  • 07m 57s
Comments:

I was so disgusted with the Hudson that I stood under that shower for a half a minute and gargled with water, cytomax, gatorade, anything I could get my hands on.

Thanks to the body glide the wetsuit came off in a snap. I put my helmet, socks, bike shoes and Glasses on. Sprayed on some sunscreen helped out a fellow TNTer who needed some sunscreen and headed out for the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I can definitely make the transition faster. I will certainly work on it for next time. Maybe I can try the whole "no sock" thing.

  • 15.82 mile/hr
Comments:

I held back on the bike and I now know that I could have worked a lot harder. I took it easy for the first 10 minutes then I started slowly passing people.

I was able to keep my cadence around 85 but I never felt like I was working really hard. I made sure to pedal hard on the down hills, which then helped with the up hills. I have a terrible problem with slowing down to around 6 mph whenever I hit a hill. It wasn't perfect but I did a good job at keeping my cadence high even when going up hill.

I took a Hammer gel at 15 minutes, 45 minutes and 1:15. I also drank two 24 oz bottles of gatorade. Which sounds like a lot but it felt just right.

What would you do differently?:

I definitely would have pushed it harder.
Transition 2
  • 02m 32s
Comments:

I came to a stop at the dismount line unclipped and walked to my Rack. I took my helmet off changed my Bike shoes for my sneakers, put on my hat and my Fuel belt and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Run to my rack area. Get Yankz for my sneakers.

Comments:

I walked up that first hill leading out of Riverside park. I felt a funny sensation in my Upper torso area not my stomach and not my lungs just a weird pressure all around my chest. Possibly the hudson river water interacting with the 4 imodium caplets that I took in the morning.

I started to feel a lot better once I hit the park. It was great seeing all the TNT folk out there screaming their heads off.

There is just nothing better than having someone call your name as you go running by.
What would you do differently?:

I would have run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

I probably should have stretched. But Instead I had a bottle of water and a banana. Then after about 15 minutes I had a Strawberry shortcake ice cream bar. I know, I know not a great choice but it tasted realy good.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I didn't train as much as I did for St. Anthony's.

I still need to do a whole lot of work on my swimming and biking skills. I also need to figure out a little better how much I can push it on the bike and still have enough energy left for the run.

Event comments:

I did better than last time but that is due to the wonderful current in the Hudson.

My Bike was 2 minutes faster but St A's is a totally flat course so I feel good about that.

My run was 4 minutes faster but I kept holdin back until the last mile.

I don't think I could have done much better but I definitely could have done better.

I actually enjoyed the Biking and the running. I have a ton of work to do on the swimming. All in all I had a ball and i plan on doing it again next year.
