Sunny
Total Time = 1h 24m 18s
Overall Rank = 159/415
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 14/43
Pre-race routine:

Had a scrambled egg, some fruit, and a protein bar for breakfast. I live only 5 minutes from the start, so it was an easy drive. Got there about 6:45 and it was already 70%full.
Event warmup:

The rain from the day before must have JUST brought the water temp down to 77, so I put on my wetsuit and took advantage of the swim warm-up. Got my transition area as tidy as I could, did some stretching while waiting for the start.
Swim
  • 16m 47s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

Believe everything you hear about the starts of swims. They are a jumble of confusion and can be disorientating. I intentionally started near the back, although I was strong enough to swim in the middle of the pack. I ended up off course twice which hurt my time. I was on the receiving and giving end of kicks/grabs at least two dozen times.
What would you do differently?:

Swim with my head up more until the crowd sorts itself out.
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

This was my worst part. I had practiced, but apparently not enough. I have to wear socks so I wasn't going to wait until T2 to put them on. That slowed me down a bit, but what really slowed me down was putting on my shirt. At least 30 seconds lost there - I felt like an idiot. It also didn't help that the guy in the next bike rack had his stuff spread out all over my exit path, so I had to go backwards and under my rack to get out.
What would you do differently?:

Get a tri-suit or wear my shirt under sweatsuit so I only have to worry about socks.
Bike
  • 40m 9s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.58 mile/hr
Comments:

I'd say this was my best and favorite part. It helps that I live two miles from the course so I'd ridden it before several times and knew what to expect and how to pace myself.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing much. Inflate tires a bit more, maybe.
Transition 2
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

Much better than T1. Having a race belt helped. Just took off my helmet, put on my belt, and I was out of there!
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing.
Run
  • 24m 9s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I was hoping to be a bit faster. I felt better than I thought immediately after leaving transition, but after about 1/2 mile my legs started feeling heavy and I let some doubt creep in for a few moments. I shut it out, refocused, found a woman who had a pace that suited me, and just followed her the rest of the way.
What would you do differently?:

Train a bit more, stretch a bit more.
Post race
Warm down:

Great spread for the athletes afterwards! Chocolate milk, fruit, bread, breakfast pizza (don't knock it until you've tried it), and massages too.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not training hard enough or starting to train earlier.

Event comments:

This was my first tri, and I had a great time. I'm looking forward to doing more in the future. If you're in the Des Moines area and want to start out with a sprint-length triathlon, I can't imagine there being too many better than this.
