Event warmup:

My warmup consisted of me frantically running around trying to locate a new swim cap because I lost mine just 5 minutes before transition was closing.

Awesome.

Was able to get in the water and swam about 75-100 yards but there was no organization to it...it was a free for all so I didn't want to get hit head on...which was happening.

Comments:

Thought this went rather well. Taking the right at the first buoy you couldn't see anything with the sun. You just hoped that the swimmers in front of you could see...and followed them.

About 3/4 way through I had caught the 2 waves that had left before me and it was just congested and turned into a fight to get through some of them.

What would you do differently?:

I could have gone harder and kicked more and I think that used more energy than it should have with all the pulling I was doing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Having not practiced my flying mount since last year I opted not to do it. And just put the shoes on in transition. Smart move I think in the long run.

What would you do differently?:

Have practiced my flying mount so I could do it on race day.

Comments:

This was nuts. I've never done so much climbing in 56 miles than I did for this race. I felt great while doing it though so I think that's a huge positive out of the day for the bike.

Mile 10 my bottle launcher broke and was hitting my back wheel. I had to take it off, put one of the bottles down my jersey and the other in my back pocket. This was quite the hassle and stopped me for a couple minutes while I tried to get everything figured out.

I realized around mile 40 that the sub 5 hour mark was in serious danger. I didn't give in but also made a mental realistic note of it. I continued to push.

Reached mile 51 and had an average of 20mph and I was pleased with that. But the last 5 miles are climbing and that brought my average down.

What would you do differently?:

Not sure I would change anything. I pushed on the course for all the climbs and I thought my pacing was great.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

I didn't do a flying dismount which was the right move. I came to a complete stop and lifted my right leg over and it completed seized up with a cramp. I'm thankful I didn't do a flying dismount...that could have been tragic if I did!

The bike wouldn't stay upright in the rack...not sure why but it was leaning super hard on one side.

Got out as soon as I could.

Run
  • 1h 58m 43s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

This destroyed me. I was feeling good starting the run and then the hills just took me out of the game.

I had to walk on several occasions but never stopped moving forward.

In the grand scheme of things it's hard to complain bout a sub 2 hour half during a race but I just felt my conditioning was better than what showed today.

Every aid station I drank to cups of water, dumped one over my head, and dumped ice down my jersey.

It was brutally hot.

What would you do differently?:

Work on my hill repeats more?
Post race
Warm down:

Got an ice bath, Thermotec(?) recovery legging thingies (lol) and lots of food.
