My amazing wife's mind!
79F / 26C
Sunny
Total Time = 14h 42m 54s
Overall Rank = 1/1
Age Group = 37
Age Group Rank = 1/1
Pre-race routine:

had GAK suppliment, banana, Gatorade "prime." got to the water, made sure wife and a few friends were in place & knew how to chart times, prayed with them, put earplugs in (hate swimmer ear), and they gave us the countdown!
Event warmup:

none, really.
Swim
  • 1h 41m 12s
  • 4224 yards
  • 35m 56s / 1500 yards
Comments:

a young man from our school swam it with me, he is a way better swimmer than i am! Still, I was shocked at the swim time, it was a PR! Especially given how often I ended up veering strong left. Also, I cramped up at the first lap. I thought it was a bad omen, but it worked out really well!
What would you do differently?:

I'd start the event 30 minutes later, or train in the dark more. it was hard having the first 30 minutes in the dark. I found that I listed a lot more, probably because I couldn't see when i was trying to sight.
Transition 1
  • 08m 32s
Comments:

Given the nature of the race (homegrown, supported by friends and family) I didn't place a big emphasis on the transition times. I knew there would be more time taken up by visiting and being encouraged. So I know I could have shaved 5 minutes off of each transition if it was in hard core race mode, but it was worth the delay. took 800 mg time release ibuprofen, glad i did!
What would you do differently?:

nothing really
Bike
  • 7h 56m 20s
  • 112 miles
  • 14.11 mile/hr
Comments:

biked with a good friend of mine who put a lot of work into developing the awesome course. from mile 70-90 it felt like a wasteland. We dropped pace, had a moderate headwind, and a moderate extended climb w/some rollers. once we hit 90, we turned toward home, and realized we could still make it under 8 hrs if we hsutled, SO WE DID!
What would you do differently?:

I would have trained more on the actual course, so as to be familiar with the route/roads, to help eliminate the psychological impact of not knowing the route. I'm really glad I had my Adamo seat!
Transition 2
  • 07m 3s
Comments:

again, friends supporting me, i knew i was going to sacrifice a few minutes. posing for a few photos w/the running crew, etc.
What would you do differently?:

I still should have had more intensity about getting off the bike and in the sneakers though!
Run
  • 4h 49m 47s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 11m 04s  min/mile
What would you do differently?:

I should have hydrated more early. when i did start hydrating, it was too late, i was way thirsty, and drank too much. also, i should have tried to go slower on the beginning of the course on the slow downhill. my buddies kept telling me i was going faster than i planned, but it just didn't feel comfortable to go any slower. when i got back to the park and had 6.2 to go, i didn't want to stop, but so many friends wanted to say hi, give me water, check in on me, i ended up stopping, then when i started up again, the IT band on my left was really irritating my bersa sack on my knee joint, and i hobbled for half a mile before being able to run again.
Post race
Warm down:

they had the most epic finish line, with a lighted runway, cheering section, music, ribbon...everything a guy could want, except a chair!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

just needed more training time and familiarity with the course. also, i had planned on taking another 800 mg ibuprofen and gatorade prime, but i couldn't find what i had packed :-(

Event comments:

it was homegrown, wouldn't do it any other way! discussion thread about it here:

had 5-7 people running with me, only two running the entire marathon course. one of them finished completely! (the other one was suffering hard jet-lag!)
Course: 10 miles out from Klineline park via Padden Parkway trail, then return to park, pick up the remaining 6.2 on the salmon creek trail. small hill @ first of run, then long gradual down hill for couple miles. pretty flat after that until return, where long gradual uphill, followed by small downhill, then to the 6.2, which was pretty flat, except two small hills (out & back, so i hit them twice). mile 3-10 was direct sun, at hardest part of sun/course.
