Swim
Comments: a young man from our school swam it with me, he is a way better swimmer than i am! Still, I was shocked at the swim time, it was a PR! Especially given how often I ended up veering strong left. Also, I cramped up at the first lap. I thought it was a bad omen, but it worked out really well! What would you do differently?: I'd start the event 30 minutes later, or train in the dark more. it was hard having the first 30 minutes in the dark. I found that I listed a lot more, probably because I couldn't see when i was trying to sight. Transition 1
Comments: Given the nature of the race (homegrown, supported by friends and family) I didn't place a big emphasis on the transition times. I knew there would be more time taken up by visiting and being encouraged. So I know I could have shaved 5 minutes off of each transition if it was in hard core race mode, but it was worth the delay. took 800 mg time release ibuprofen, glad i did! What would you do differently?: nothing really Bike
Comments: biked with a good friend of mine who put a lot of work into developing the awesome course. from mile 70-90 it felt like a wasteland. We dropped pace, had a moderate headwind, and a moderate extended climb w/some rollers. once we hit 90, we turned toward home, and realized we could still make it under 8 hrs if we hsutled, SO WE DID! What would you do differently?: I would have trained more on the actual course, so as to be familiar with the route/roads, to help eliminate the psychological impact of not knowing the route. I'm really glad I had my Adamo seat! Transition 2
Comments: again, friends supporting me, i knew i was going to sacrifice a few minutes. posing for a few photos w/the running crew, etc. What would you do differently?: I still should have had more intensity about getting off the bike and in the sneakers though! Run
What would you do differently?: I should have hydrated more early. when i did start hydrating, it was too late, i was way thirsty, and drank too much. also, i should have tried to go slower on the beginning of the course on the slow downhill. my buddies kept telling me i was going faster than i planned, but it just didn't feel comfortable to go any slower. when i got back to the park and had 6.2 to go, i didn't want to stop, but so many friends wanted to say hi, give me water, check in on me, i ended up stopping, then when i started up again, the IT band on my left was really irritating my bersa sack on my knee joint, and i hobbled for half a mile before being able to run again. Post race
Warm down: they had the most epic finish line, with a lighted runway, cheering section, music, ribbon...everything a guy could want, except a chair! What limited your ability to perform faster: just needed more training time and familiarity with the course. also, i had planned on taking another 800 mg ibuprofen and gatorade prime, but i couldn't find what i had packed :-( Event comments: it was homegrown, wouldn't do it any other way! discussion thread about it here: http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid... had GAK suppliment, banana, Gatorade "prime." got to the water, made sure wife and a few friends were in place & knew how to chart times, prayed with them, put earplugs in (hate swimmer ear), and they gave us the countdown!
none, really.
