Swim
  • 37m 30s
  • 1800 meters
  • 02m 05s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was interesting, when the gun sounded I just reacted. Got in the water and I just thought about swimming. I got kicked, shoved, slapped... It was so dark when we started that I could not see anything in front of me. I was just looking for someone to draft from. I just kept going. Got a bit lost close to the turn around point but then I just picked it up. I started to catch up a ton of guys that had passed me before.
What would you do differently?:

Get better at drafting. But overall I was happy with my swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

I had a terrible time at T1- I was a bit disoriented after the swim. I tried to put my helmet on first, and for some weird reason I picked up my bike from the rack. I tried to put my helmet on, put my bike back on the rack, then put helmet on. ran out of T1 and started peddaling.
What would you do differently?:

Just not get too anxious to put the gear on. I was a bit disoriented out of the water and I wanted to do all at once ..put on the helmet get on the bike and get on the shoes. I have to concentrate on 1 thing at a time. I lost a lot of time on T1

Comments:

My bike ride started just as T1 ended..horrible. I was climbing the first hill when a fellow triathlete said that I had a flat. I was going uphill and (newbie me) slowed down. And fell. All the Cytomax on My Profile design aero bottle was lost. Thats 24 oz of liquid less. And it comes out that I did not have a flat!. I don't know if he was just being funny or got confused by the color of my tires (white).Got up and continued.

The ride was amazing. My bike was fast on the downhills and light on the climbs. It felt great. I kept passing people on the climbs and on the downhills.

At about Mile 10 I'm doing about 35 mph going downhill. It was fun..then I see a support person signaling for a right hand turn. I make the turn and right away there is another support person telling me to turn left. I ate the pavement. My bike flew left I flew right skidding with my back on the pavement. Then all those guys I had passed went by. One of them made a stupid comment about how fast I was riding.

Got up dusted off and continued. I ran out of liquid at mile 25. I pushed for 15 miles without liquid. OH.. one more thing SALT CAPSULES RULE! and saltstick too highly recomended..but get the 7 capsule stick not the 3 capsule.

I just found out that I love the bike portion of the race.

What would you do differently?:

Study the bike course a bit more. Throw away the Profile design aero bottle. It simply sucks. Get the podiumquest bottle.
Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

T2 went better. I was pretty fast here. helmet off, shoes on quick i has a small cooler with water bottles ready at T2.
What would you do differently?:

not much..I felt good on this transition
Run
  • 1h 57m 23s
  • 10 miles
  • 11m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Wow the run...Its starts pretty flat..then up up up and away. once you pass the waterfront portion is all climbing. PR 100 is a steady climb. then at around mile 5.. there is a SUPER HILL... steeper than anything I encountered on the bike. I ran half of it then I just walked to the top... then continued running. some more hills then it was all downhill and flat. I was not fast. But I was steady.
What would you do differently?:

Its my first tri...I think I did pretty good on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Just walked and said hello to everyone.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience. This was a measuring race. I just wanted to know where I was.

Event comments:

This is by far the hardest Triathlon in Puerto Rico. If the Organizers wanted, they could turn this into a 1/2 Ironman. Tough course. Well organized. There were volunteers but I feel there were not enough. The drink stations were plenty but I feel they were in the wrong areas sometimes.

Tough course for a newbie. I finished it..but I think it can be painful if you are not training for this type of distance.

Overall Tony "GT" Gonzalez did an excellent job organizing the event.
