Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30am and had granola for breakfast. Got to the race at 6:00am, and transition was already open. Got body marked, set up transition (got a pretty good spot 2nd place from the end of the rack), got a timing chip. Ate a Cliff bar one hour before start. Had a GU gel 5 minutes before the swim start.
Event warmup:

300m swim and a little bit of stretching
Swim
  • 05m 32s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pretty eventful swim ;-) Started in the first row. Me and another guy clashed for the first 50m since I was swimming for the turn-around buoy, and he was trying to get to the closest one. Then I finally managed to pull away.

Right after the turnaround we ran into some swimmers from the previous wave(s). I was really unimpressed by 4 ladies (who started with the open wave probably) doing breast stroke next to each other. First, they kick you in the face, and then you spend time to get around them ;-)
What would you do differently?:

Sight better to avoid slow swimmers from previous waves. Find a fish to draft!
Transition 1
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

got delayed a little bit by another guy who jumped on the bike but had some trouble getting his feet on top of the shoes.
What would you do differently?:

run a bit further after the mount line to avoid other people mounting up
Bike
  • 33m 48s
  • 11.1 miles
  • 19.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty good ride overall. Passed a lot of people, and got passed by 5 or 6. Course was measured a bit short. My computer showed 11.35 miles just like on practice rides.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder on the bike
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Jumped off the bike about 10 feet before the dismount line
What would you do differently?:

Jump off the bike right before the line.
Run
  • 14m 47s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Got passed by two people exiting transition. I was running slow at the beginning trying to avoid HR spike up, so I didn't try to stay with the guys who passed me. Felt slow for the first mile, but finally got the running legs on the way back, so 2nd mile must have been much faster.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder on the run. More BRICKs!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit, drank some sports drink.

Event comments:

Great first race! Looking forward to CapTex Tri in two weeks.
