Overall Rank = 74/285

Age Group Rank = 18/51
Pre-race routine:

Start time fairly late (8am), which gave me plenty of time to digest a fairly big breakfast. Oatmeal, coffee, english muffin with cream cheese. Had a little gatorade.

Event warmup:

Didn't really do anything. Extremely hot. I should have stretched, maybe run a little, but I just walked around to familiarize myself with the transition areas. Scoped out the lake, etc.
Swim
  • 16m 54s
  • 804 meters
  • 02m 06s / 100 meters
Comments:

My first OWS. No visibility in the water. I felt like my wetsuit was too tight around the shoulders and I need to remember to try to pull up more of the material to that region next time to see if that helps. This was harder than I imagined, but very doable. My sighting wasn't very good. Went off course a lot (I tended to drift to the right).
What would you do differently?:

Practice sighting. Pull wet suit material up (to make more room in shoulders)? Try to relax more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

I don't do any of the fancy stuff yet (next year).
What would you do differently?:

My equipment layout was pretty good. I used "glide" around my ankles and neck - that seemed to help ease the suit off. Next time, I'd like to tape the gel pack(s) to my bike rather than have to remember to put them in my shirt pocket.
Bike
  • 55m 27s
  • 16 miles
  • 17.31 mile/hr
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

My right calf completely cramped up on me when changing shoes...had to wait at least 15 - 20 secs. for it to ease.
Run
  • 22m 10s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

The first mile was really tough (it always is), but it got easier from there. I passed a few guys. One guy passed me.
What would you do differently?:

Improve mental toughness. Maybe do some hill and brick training.
Post race
Warm down:

hands on my knees catching my breath. sitting down close to the finish line

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My first tri. Very hot. Swim was harder than expected, but manageable. Should have pulled wetsuit up a little to give more room in shoulders. I'm concerned it's too small, but the jury is still out...Bike was very hilly, but interesting. I could have pushed a little harder on the bike, but I held back a little since I didn't know the course and didn't know when the hills would stop (it seemed like they kept on coming until pretty close to the end).
