Pre-race routine:

Traveled for the race, but forgot to pack any of my usual pre-race breakfast. I made the mistake of getting drive-thru and felt heavy the rest of the morning.
Event warmup:

Racked early on the end of a row, met a great couple, felt old surrounded by so many collegiates.
Swim
  • 18m 24s
  • 875 yards
  • 02m 06s / 100 yards
Comments:

Decent swim, but had some slight discomfort in my left shoulder about half way. Dialed back my effort and swam to the outside of the pack.
What would you do differently?:

I would have benefited from an actual swim warm-up.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No hitches for my style with the exception of it taking 2-3 extra tries to fish my earplug out of my right ear.
Bike
  • 59m 13s
  • 12 miles
  • 12.16 mile/hr
Comments:

Really tough ride for me - way off my game. Right of transition was the toughest grade climb of the course. Even though I checked (and had the bike guy check) my front derailleur, I could not drop down into my lowest ring. I had to pull over, unclip, and manually move the chain. Then I could not get started again on the steep grade as my unclipped shoe kept slipping...so I walked it - burned up to much energy and emotion with that. The rest of the course was hilly with a long, slow climb on the way back and a second climb of that first hill back into transition.

I am proud that I rode it that time, but man it took a bunch more out of me.
What would you do differently?:

Think I am going to finally get my bike fully serviced and maybe replace that derailleur.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 50m 5s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 16m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

It was about this time that my stomach went ape-sh#t. I started out running but was slowed to a walk after a few hundred yards. I decided to press on and walk it out, even though I was on the verge of vomiting. Would walk til I felt settled and then would jog counting steps up and then down, taking a walk break, and then trying to up that number by 5 the next time.
I hit a porta-john at the turn around and felt a tad better.
What would you do differently?:

Better pre-race nutrition because my stomach killed me. And I am looking at training options for running while fatigued.
Post race
Warm down:

Changed into sweats and stretched. Had a banana and a slice of pizza (gotta love college races) and felt almost immediately better. Lunch with friend, nap, drive home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutrition and fatigue on the run.

Event comments:

Great college race - not a lot of pomp and circumstance. Cal Poly put together a great event. The hills of the bike leg are a little intense if you are using this as a true "warm-up" to your season.
