Age Group Rank = 1/65
Pre-race routine:

woke up early as usual and had a bowl of oatmeal and headed for the race with the wife. got there at 6am and there were already 20 cars in the parking area! people get up early for races in this part of the world :) got set up in transition and drank some gu2o and nibbled on a peanut butter bagel.
Event warmup:

15 minute spin and about 200 yard swim. nothing hard, just getting loose.
Swim
  • 14m 52s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

felt pretty good for not swimming much in the last few weeks. managed to get a couple pairs of feet and hang with them for longer than usual. my time ended up slower than last year but so were most of the other times so i think the course was a little long.
What would you do differently?:

train more (duh)
Transition 1
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

with no wetsuit it went pretty quickly. i had a great rack right at bike out. the extra time was for running the length of the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 43m 27s
  • 18 miles
  • 24.86 mile/hr
Comments:

wow! my fastest avg. speed ever! i felt great on the bike. there were 2 other guys that ended up riding with me and we swapped places for about 10 miles. great fun!
What would you do differently?:

go faster?! maybe i have 25 mph in me.
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

someone had racked on my gear so i had to wiggle around to get my bike in without blocking anyone else. very frustrating. had a little trouble getting my running shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

loosen up the laces of my running shoes a little
Run
  • 30m 18s
  • 4.5 miles
  • 06m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

pretty good run. with the way the waves were started i had no idea where i was in relation to overall and i only was one from my age group. i passed him in the first mile only to have him come up to me at mile 3.5. i decided there was no way he was going by easily so i paced with him until the mile 4 sign and the picked it up and accelerated through the finish. he finished about 17 seconds behind me. good kick for me!
What would you do differently?:

i probably could have had a faster overall pace but didn't want to burn out with a mile left.
Post race
Warm down:

walked a lot and drank my endurox. my mom and i walked back on the run course to wait for my wife to come by and i jogged a bit with her.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of swim training. haven't been feeling fast on the run so i didn't go nuts with the pace.

Event comments:

great race with a fantastic course. the mile markers on the course were way off and the official timing didn't mesh with the calculated paces according to published distances or my bike computer. this is a notoriously competitive race and i love it!
