Pre-race routine:

Since the event takes place about .5 miles from my home, I was able to wake up around 6am, and ride my bike to the transition area for setup. My wife and I then just walked around taking in the atmosphere.

This was my first ever triathlon.
Event warmup:

My start time was 9:44:45. I tried just enjoying the event and not get to anxious. At about 9:25, I entered the pool area and found my spot in line. Again, I tried to just remain calm, and let everything just happen.
Swim
  • 08m 4s
  • 300 yards
  • 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

The pool was a little harder than I expected. I was passed after the third lap, and then again after the 8th lap. My breathing was not controlled, and I had to stop once for a few seconds to catch my breath.

Considering that the swim time does not stop until you get out of the pool and run past the chip detector, my time was pretty much what I had projected, I just labored more than I thought I would.
What would you do differently?:

I need to concentrate on swim technique, and I need to get more cardio workouts in. These two areas would improve my time considerably.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

I thought my T1 time was pretty good. My socks and shoes went on fast, as did my sunglasses and helmet. I was able to run with my bike to the mount area.
What would you do differently?:

This being my first tri, I though t1 was pretty good. No real complaints here. I know I can do it faster with more training, but as for today, I am pleased.
Bike
  • 1h 01m
  • 14 miles
  • 13.77 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike leg went pretty well. I did not try to do too much. I only passed one person, and was passed by about 10 or so. I really just wanted to enjoy the bike, and not put a lot of pressure on myself. The hills were challenging, and it was starting to get pretty hot.

All in all, I am pleased with my effort on the bike. I wanted to finish the bike portion in 1 hour, and I just missed that.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on my conditioning, and get more road miles in training to improve here. I found that I enjoy biking, so I am looking forward to my continued training in this area.
Transition 2
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

My T1 time was longer than I thought was going to be. Given that I did not have to change shoes, I actually thought that under 1 minutes was possible. I ended up taking extra time to get fluids, then I took a few steps to the run start, and my wife reminded me that I forgot my number belt, so that took extra time.
What would you do differently?:

There is definately time that can be made up here. Just forgetting my number probably cost me 15 seconds itself.
Run
  • 48m 14s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 15m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

I really had nothing left for the run. I legs were shot. I tried running to the 1 mile mark, but that did not happen. I had to start walking at the .8mile mark. I got some water at the 1 mile mark, then jogged down the big hill. When I got to the bottom, I met another runner, Kevin, and we ended up walking/running together for the rest of the race. We did a good job in encouraging each other during our run segments. At the end, we 'sprinted' through the finish. I was totally spent after crossing the line.
What would you do differently?:

The run segment was the one segment that I spent the least time on during my training, and it shows. I thought it would take me 45 minutes to finish, but it took just over 48 minutes.
If I was to improve my overall time in these types of event, and really need to concentrate more effort on this portion.
Post race
Warm down:

Tried to catch my breath, and enjoy a slice of pizza and drinks.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Really, it is just me. I need to lose some weight, and work on my cardio. If I do those two things, my times will improve greatly.

Event comments:

This race takes place in my neighborhood. I finally got tired of seeing people participate in this event, while I was standing on the sidelines. While my ranking was near the bottom, I am glad I did this, and hope to do it again next year.
