Total Time = 1h 00m
Overall Rank = 160/825
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 6/24
Pre-race routine:

up at 4 AM; 1/2 cup of oatmeal and a Clif bar w/ 3 cups of coffee. Forgot to sip my accelerade while waiting on swim wave. Took in some water.
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 09m 6s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

started in back; took it easy because of congestion until first buoy. Good rhythm, right side breathing every two strokes. Took a few breaths every four strokes with my head down pulling between people. Didn't tax myself.
What would you do differently?:

nothing; only swam 500yds the day before for the first time since last November. This was just a tune up race.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

suit hang on chip strap; didn't tuck strap under suit prior to start. Other than that farely flawless. Ran in shoes since mount was 15 yds away; normally have shoes clipped in.
What would you do differently?:

Tuck in chip. will trim the bottom a little before Encinitas. Will swim almost every day until then also.
Bike
  • 28m 55s
  • 9 miles
  • 18.67 mile/hr
Comments:

time included transitions. Garmin had 25:32 at 21.1mph. First time on Zipp 404s; first time average over 20mph. Popped a thermolyte at the mid point; consumed about 12ozs of G2.
What would you do differently?:

Ride my rode bike. Spent a lot of time on the bars due to slower riders from preceding waves on the narrow Fiesta Island course.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Quick transition. First time to rack the bike from the rear due to aero bottle. New Adidas shoes easy to get out of; slid right into the Zoots and off and running.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Run
  • 21m 59s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Out kicked someone who started 10min ahead of me at the finish line for no good reason. Didn't drink any which is usual for me on a 5k. Obviously had a little left in the tank; should have used it on the course.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little more the first lap. Didn't wear a watch but probably ran negative splits.
Post race
Warm down:

none

What limited your ability to perform faster:

hadn't swam in 6 months.

Event comments:

6th out of 24 is best performance to date. This is the first race where I ranked higher on the bike split than the run. Very pleased, especially considering lack of swimming. Leg strength was stronger than last year's races.
