Pre-race routine:

Decided to drive to the race rather than stay at a hotel. This meant that we had to leave the house @ 4:00am but I'm usually up at that time anyways.
Got up ate my oatmeal and loaded up the truck. I was vert calm which is unusual but this was a training race with no expectations. Previous day was the usual long day so my legs were tired.
Event warmup:

This was the start of the comedy of errors. As I was getting my wet suit on for a pre swim I tore a big hole in the arm and then the leg, this is a brand new wet suit! That was it for the warm-up!
Swim

  • 01m 51s / 100 meters
Comments:

This is always the event that I'm most nervous about but I am happy to say it was great. I am very surprised that my time wasn't better but I think that was due to poor navigation. Coming out of the water was tough as I wrenched my foot on the rocks but no damage done.
What would you do differently?:

sight better, draft on faster swimmers
Transition 1
  • 03m 33s
Comments:

I think I had a brain cramp here, I was a little confused and took way too much time, and I don't have an answer for this.
What would you do differently?:

everything
Bike

  • 25.76 km/hr
Comments:

I was feeling good on the bike. I was holding race pace which is 265-275w.
Everything was going great till the 15km mark, I was going downhill into a corner; this is when my rear tire blew. I lost control, fell onto my hip, skidded down the hill into the grill of a rather large truck. All I hear are people yelling and screaming, I'm totally confused and I notice a lot of red liquid around me, I get up check for cuts and realize it was the contents of my drink, whooo whoo.
While still in a daze I pick up my bike and do a quick inventory, blown rear tubular and handle bars twisted but nothing seemed broken. During this time there are now three others that also crashed, one needing an ambulance.
At least 20 min has passed and I'm starting to feel better, so instead of standing around waiting for the meat wagon I decided to fix my bike. Changed the tubular, no problem and straightened out the bars also no problem. At this point I have two choices, stand around listening to the three others moan and groan or get on my bike and finish this, I decided to finish the race, my shirt and shorts were torn, ego a little bruised and a lot less skin to weigh me down, bring it on.
I had to take it easy as the rear tire is only held by the air pressure, no glue and I still had 40km to go so I decided to take my time (225w) and see how many people I can help or encourage for the rest of the day, I was starting to have a great day

What would you do differently?:

not Crash
Transition 2
  • 05m 24s
Comments:

I was having a debate with myself on whether I can finish this. My abrasions and contusions were starting to hurt, a lot. So I walked around the transition and had my own personal argument, I decided to continue my run and encourage anyone I see that could use some.
Run
  • 1h 21m 26s
  • 15 kms
  • 05m 26s  min/km
Comments:

So I started out and the first people I see are the wife and kids of my good friend and coach, they said they heard my number over the loud speakers that I crashed and out of the race! Anyways talked to them for a couple of min, letting them know what happened and then continued on. One of the neat things about this course is that on your way out you pass the finish, as I ways passing, the pro's were coming in and I got to congratulate my coach and one of my swimming partners, chatted with them and continued on.
I met a lot of nice people during the run, I didn't run hard and really enjoyed the rest of the race, for the next race I'm going to stay at the finish a little longer and cheer these people in. I think I get caught up in my own bullshit (pace, watts, and finishing times) and forget what this is all about. I really hope I learned something from this experience, next race in Sunday in Guelph; I’m going to tri, ;-)!

What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

drink drink and drink more, got my stuff and went to the returant, my friends wwere waithing for me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

crashing, contusions, scrapes

Event comments:

Do this race if you are in the area, great town and great people. Probably the year’s most competitive race in Ontario.
