Pre-race routine:

woke up around 4am for the 45minute drive. On the way, I ad a bagel with peanut butter, a plum, banana, banana chips and some gorp. I also had ~24ounces of accelerade and took 3 endurolyte tablets about 1.5 hrs before the start of my wave
Event warmup:

Being in the 11th and final wave, I had a lot of time to warmup. I swam in the lake for about 10-15minutes, just to get my heartrate elevated.
Swim
  • 41m 1s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt I did very well with my navigation, which is something that has challenged me in the past. I did notice it was harder for me to stay in a straight line when I was breathing from my left side (pulled right very quickly), so the majority of my swim was breathing to the right. My time was better than the 1.5K swim at Keuka Lake, so I am very pleased with my time.
What would you do differently?:

I need to practice keeping a straight line while breathing to the left. While this did not have an adverse impact on my swim, I'll need to be improve on this for my next race.
Transition 1
  • 05m 58s
Comments:

The threat of rain meant everything was stored in plastic bags, so it took a bit of time digging stuff out. I kept my bike chain/pedals covered in plastic too, which I think was a good decision.
What would you do differently?:

I wasn't too worried about my transition time, so at this point, I'm OK
Bike
  • 3h 21m 9s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.70 mile/hr
Comments:

The first hour of the bike was overcast and the roads wet. As the day progressed, the sun cam out and the roads dried. Within 15 min. on the bike, I had 2 endorolytes and a gel. I kept on target for a bottle consumed per every 10 miles, and had a gel at just about every aid station. It was fun trying to hit the bullseye with my empty water bottles just before the aid stations! I felt very comfortable during the ride - nothing hurt, no cramps, stayed well hydrated.
What would you do differently?:

I had figured this portion of the race was going to be the poorest for me. My year's training focused on the run and swim and I let the bike portion slip a bit (if I had to choose between a run workout or a bike workout, the bike usually was the one that got cut out or shortened). It showed during this race. My goal was to beat 3:30, but I was hoping to be closer to 3hrs. Not knowing for sure how much gas I would have left for the run, I kept a comfortable pace on the bike. Perhaps I could of pushed a bit more...
Transition 2
  • 04m 15s
Comments:

I took my gloves off before I came into the transition area to save some time. I had good legs running after I got off the bike. I felt good passing a few people at the dismount! I applied a bunch of sunscreen in T2 since it had gotten hot and sunny.
What would you do differently?:

Apply bodyglide on my nipples before heading out. No bleeding nipples, but they were sore afterwards...
Run
  • 2h 18m 29s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

I was able to run the entire distance, with the exception of 1 or 2 hills. I also walked at each aid station, making sure I consumed enough liquids. The best part of the whole run was the 100 yrds leading to the finish. Plus, at the last 1-2 miles, a relay runner came alongside and had me pick up the pace - after a while, she couldn't keep up with me. That really motivated me and I felt strong at the finish!
What would you do differently?:

I was hoping to go a bit faster. I really wanted to do it in 2hrs.
Post race
Warm down:

Massage about 1 hour after the race. Walked around a bit to cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No cramps, well hydrated... the thing that limited me to go faster was my training. My goals were to: 1. finish; 2. finish <7hrs; 3. finish ~6:30. I met all my goals, so no complaints.

Event comments:

Highly recommended race. Can't wait to do it next year!
