Pre-race routine:

Spent the night at Blanes so I could set T2 within walking distance from his place. Was a genius idea until we started walking outside and its friggin raining. Then, the last bus was suppose to leave T2 at 6:30am...notsomuch. They were short on buses and me and about 300 friends didnt get to the race until about 7:40. Everything was pushed 30 minutes back including the Pro start, which I wanted to see..but didnt. To top off the ride, i got to sit on the floor of the bus...nice and comfy let me tell ya.
Event warmup:

Not much of a warmup. Got to my bike, which I had a great rack spot one from the edge about halfway between the swim exit and bike exit. Put my gu packs on board loaded the water bottles. Then noticed i forgot the extended piece for my areo bottle, so that was fun trying to drink from that during the race. Put wetsuit on, and waited in line all of about 5 minutes and I was in the water.

Comments:

Glad it was a "shot" or 6 at a time launch. This was nice. My second ever open water swim. Love the wetsuit swim. Started out slow and easy, got crossed over a few times by a few people and had to regroup within the first 200m or so. First third of this course was tough, had a minor goggle leak on my right eye, but got it worked out at the first turn. The rest of the course I stayed at what i felt was a comfortable pace. Didnt want to go all out till i felt i could see the end of the swim. Rounded the last buoy and picked it up a bit. Pretty uneventful, with the exception of some random chop. Got about 400m out and started kicking pretty hard until i felt a twitch in my hamstring, so decided to stop the kick and just make my way in comfortably. Exited the water and got my suit down to my waist pretty quick.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more. I am a 2 min per hundred yd kinda swimmer. Just need to get more fitness behind my swim and obviously improve the stroke. My goal was 35-40 min and i did that without really pushing too terribly hard.
Transition 1
  • 03m 59s
Comments:

Longer transition I think for everyone as you had to bag all your gear and zip it up tight for transport back to the finish. Wetsuit came off quick, shoes on quick. Got a running jump on the bike but had some clip in issues for a bit. Overall not to bad.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. The double checking of packing all my gear and zipping up might have cost me a bit. About a 60 yd run from swim end to bike.

Comments:

I was looking more towards the bike than anything else. Thought I would have done much better than this and actually felt faster than the results...but time doesnt lie. Leaving the Tranisiton area and over the Dam was nice. Good long straight aways until the first climb at mile 5. That was a tough climb, got out of the saddle for a bit on that one. Saw at least 10 riders go down in front of me within the first 15 miles. Crazy. Potholes and gaps were ridiculous and made for a death grip on the handlebars for me. Not a bad course if the roads were dry and they had decent streets. Didnt time transition very well as I only got one foot out of the the shoe prior to dismount, other one stayed on my feet to T2.
What would you do differently?:

Not have it rain. Be more aggressive. Not be scared to wreck after seeing all those people go down.
Transition 2
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

slow transistion cause i had to put socks on. Was going to go sockless but with all the wet shoes feet and a run longer than a 5k...went with socks. Probably cost me a minute as when i sat down, i didnt want to get up..lol.
What would you do differently?:

Go sockless i guess. If it was dry, I would have

Comments:

Not a bad run for me. Had a goal of 8:30- 9. Was on the high side but just wanted to push myself enough and not die. Did the first mile at 8:15 and it was mostly uphill. Couldnt hold that pace after that first mile so held in at 8:45 and shuffled thru a few water stations. At mile 4 I could feel my hamstring tighten up a bit. So I tried pushing it then conceeded to it and just held the 9 per pace to the finish. Sorry Todd. Seeing the family and all the great friends there on the run and bike was very inspiring.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster, go sockless.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much. Got a bannana and took some glamor shots with the family and the boys.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Honestly, lack of training. New job, and work getting crazy really cost me more bike rides and a few more swims. The weather played the biggest factor especially on the bike.

Event comments:

First I want to thank Blane, Fitty, and Shane. Thanks guys! Blane and Fitz really helped out a ton on Saturday and Sunday getting me ready. You guys rock. Great tips and great support. Great to have you guys and the family there to cheer me on. Thanks also to the usual crew, Todds, Bobby for the swim last week. What a great time.
