Swim
Comments: This was my firt wetsuit swim, first ocean swim and first half iron distance race, so I was a bit nervous on what to expect. Overall I feel I paced perfectly. I wasn't completly gased at the finish, nor did I hold back to much. The waves were a little bit of a challange. I was nervous about the amount of salt water I may accadentally ingest, but overall I had no issues. What would you do differently?: Possibly some training in the ocean. Transition 1
Comments: Wetsuit came off easily. Transition went so smoothly and easilly that I was reluctant to leave because I felt as if I was forgeting somthing. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: Coarse was fun, scenic and completly flat. Almost too flat. Other than the bridge, I think I only used two gears for the entire ride. I think I paced perfectly. Was not to gased to run, nor did I feel I held back too much. After about mile 45 I was ready to get off the bike, and my pace did drop the last 5 miles or so as I lost the group I was with on the rest of the ride. What would you do differently?: Probally some more longer rides in training. My longest training rides were only 50 to 60 miles. Probally a couple 70 milers would make me more comfortable in the saddle for the 56. Transition 2
Comments: Trans. went smoothly. No issues. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: For the first time ever, I actually felt realy good for the run. I was just running a slow steady pace. Felt great until about mile 11. At that point I was ready to be done. The last two mile hurt, but just in the legs. Didn't have any stomach issues or cramping which was a pleasant surprize. My final time was only about 10-mins off of my stand-alone 13.1 time, which confirms my pacing for the swim and the bike. What would you do differently?: Train more. Post race
Warm down: Jumped in the cool ocean. What limited your ability to perform faster: Main thing I belive would be my total bike and run endurance. Proabally need a little more long distance training. Event comments: Well organized and put together race. Lots of great volunteers. Well marked coarse. My first HIM. My two goals were finishing and finishing in 6 hours. Meet both. Got in water and swam about 3-strokes, then got out.
