Pre-race routine:

Got up 3:45 after sleeping off and on all night. Did stretches and roller at home. Ate oatmeal and raisins. Got there too early.....at 5:15 when race did not start til 7:30. It was very cool...lower 50's and dark! Should have brought a flashlight. Walked around the transition area, where the exits/entries for swim, bike and run.
Event warmup:

Walked to swim start. Stretched and did a warm up swim in the lake. Water was warmer than the air. Long wait til actual start even though I was in the second start wave at 7:35am.
Swim
  • 07m 15s
  • 328 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Open water swim was much harder than expected even though I thought I was mentally prepared for it. I had to float on my back and do side strokes several times. Not sure I understand why I was so winded when I can do 300m easily in the lap pool.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to train for open water swim. Take some goo before the swim.
Transition 1
  • 06m 12s
Comments:

Took my time...did not even run....was trying to recover from the bad swim.
What would you do differently?:

Have a better swim before.
Bike
  • 42m 7s
  • 10 miles
  • 14.25 mile/hr
Comments:

Great ride after tentative start due to bad swim......
What would you do differently?:

GET A ROAD BIKE...trail bikes don't cut it.....
Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Ate some goo and drank some water.....much better transition but really did not rush....wanted to be sure I got a good start on the run...
Run
  • 30m 40s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Biker legs took about a half mile to wear off and feel normal...but right knee started acting up. Wore band on left knee which was acting up prior to the race....but after mile 1, knees felt more normal.
What would you do differently?:

Get up to a faster pace sooner. Did not really kick in until mid way into mile 2.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Did not train/plan well for open water swim. Took awhile to shake that wobbly start off. Slow bike, but also need to get more road miles in vs. doing spinning bike at the gym.

Event comments:

Great first tri, and got a medal for it! Perfect weather, though the start was a bit chilly. A great experience and ready to do more of them in 2010.
