Pre-race routine:

Just got up early and ate a bagel with peanut butter and a glass of OJ. Sipped on water, drove to race site.
Event warmup:

Slow jogging around race site- 5 to 10 minutes. 150 yard swim prior to start.
Swim
  • 22m 12s
  • 775 yards
  • 02m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

this was the undoing of my whole race. About halfway through my legs began cramping. Started in my calves, then my right hamstring. Gutted it out but was slower than usual and I am already slow. I had a tough time staying on course between the 2nd and 3rd buoy.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure if no wetsuit was any cause to my cramping but I for sure would use a wetsuit next time. More tme in the water, swimming fast, DUH!
Transition 1
  • 03m 33s
Comments:

was about 120 yards uphill to transition. With my cramps it was difficult. Once I was there things went fast.
Bike
  • 39m 47s
  • 11 miles
  • 16.59 mile/hr
Comments:

bike was ok. Fought off my cramps early but by mile 2 felt better.
What would you do differently?:

push a bit harder early and through the middle 1/3 of cours and let up a bit the last 2 miles or so to stretch out and get my legs back for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

t2 was good. I need to learn to get my feet out of shoes while riding to hit the ground runninga bit harder. The block top was dangerous with my cleats on and had to take it a bit easy.
What would you do differently?:

get feet out of shoes while riding.
Run
  • 28m 35s
  • 2.8 miles
  • 10m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

OUCH. First mile was hoorid! Calves cramped up bad. I overcompensated and got cramps in my shins. Had to stop for 20 seconds or so too stretch. When I started again I forced myself to relax and cramps went away. Finnaly seetled in and felt much better the 2nd lap.
What would you do differently?:

more training miles!
Post race
Warm down:

just walked around the race site

What limited your ability to perform faster:

swim fitness. Hade my swim not went bad I would have been set up for better T1, better first 2 miles on the bike and a better run. My swim cramps bothered me the whole race.

Event comments:

started about 10 minutes late due to people who cant make it to race site on time. I made it in plenty of time and am not a local. People, get there early! Come on!
