Pre-race routine:

Checked in to Transition, set up bike, ate a banana and a bar. Stretched, Glide, and Suntan Lotioned up. Hit the porta pottys. (Good Karma to someone who left some TP in a Plastic Ziploc).
Event warmup:

Quick 2 min Swim to get used to the water temp.
Swim
  • 1h 16m 51s
  • 2000 yards
  • 03m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

By far my worst open swim ever. I had a very tough time swimming in the chop. At points I was close to giving up but knew I wouldnt let myself. A DNF would have ruined my whole week. It was tough to get in any kind of rythm. Every time I would get moving a wave would come and throw me off.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice more OWS. This was the first of the year. Also need to practice in choppy water.
Transition 1
  • 03m 35s
Comments:

T1 went well considering how beat up I felt after the swim. I was easy to find the bike. It was the only one left on the rack :(
What would you do differently?:

Put shoes on on the grass. Had some burrs stick to my socks.
Bike
  • 3h 20m 3s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.80 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was okay. I didnt get enough bike training in so I kinda expected this to be one of my weaker legs. Had some pain in the IT band which caused me to have to stand repeatedly.
What would you do differently?:

More bike training this. Bit less water. Nutrtion was good.
Transition 2
  • 06m 52s
Comments:

Needed to change sock and strech a bit due to the burrs. At this point I was not hitting my goal so I wanted to enjoy the rest of the race.
Run
  • 2h 07m 41s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was my strongest leg. I didnt push to hard and wanted to enjoy the rest of my first half iron. It was a hot day. Kept dumping water. I felt pretty strong on the run considering. Caught up to my buddy Jude and finshed the run with him.
What would you do differently?:

More Brick training/Weight lifting to strengthen legs.
Post race
Warm down:

Hurricanes!!!!!!!!!! Nothing like a nice cold drink to help the pain go away.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Should have trained more.

Event comments:

Great Race. Only thing that would have made it better is some Jazz bands out playing and some better post race.
