Pre-race routine:

Only slept 2 hours the night before (from 9:30p to 11:30p). Was still wide awake at 0300, so I headed to the USO to call home and get some coffee. Got to the race start at 0530 for 6 start.

No food, not hungry, drank a couple bottles of water.

Comments:

Out and back along the airstrip. Heavy air (still haven't seen the sun, moon or sky yet) and thankfully had my inhaler. Stayed about 30 feet behind the front pack and I was pretty happy about that. One female was in the pack. Strong headwind out, it took a lot out of me. Used my inhaler at the turnaround. Got passed by one male from my unit at this point.

Legs felt OK, but lungs did not. Struggled to hang on until the end. Got passed by one female (civilian contractor) about 50 meters from the finish. DAMN!
Post race
Warm down:

Waited for about the 10 people from my unit I recruited to go with me. I annoyed so many people the day before to get them to come with me. Thankfully a couple COL's and the SGM did and we had a great time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sand. Asthma.

Event comments:

First race of my deployment. Hopefully many more. Got a free t-shirt (no race fee) that we're calling our Halloween costume. Great fun.
