Pre-race routine:

No breakfast; sip water through morning; got to rec center @ 8:00 when it opened; set up transitions; rhodiola @ 8:15 & 8:50; gel @ 8:55
Event warmup:

5:00 jogging; 7:00 bike; stretch; one lap swim
Swim
  • 14m 15s
  • 875 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was in the lane next to the fastest swimmer - had to focus on keeping my own pace. Felt a bit amped up, so my heart rate probably wasn't great. Turns weren't perfect either, but not bad. It was my fastest half mile by :20.
What would you do differently?:

Do more speed work in training.
Transition 1
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Only had to put on socks/shoes (quick laces) - rest was on bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 26m 42s
  • 10 miles
  • 22.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Didn't push too hard at the start, decent effort for middle ~:20. The last mile everyone was telling me to push it because I easily could have taken the lead in the race - but I backed way off to get my heart rate down - learned in previous races that if I don't, I get a nasty side ache in the run.
What would you do differently?:

I could have pushed harder at the beginning as long as I back off toward the end - could have gained maybe another :45.
Transition 2
  • 00m 5s
Comments:

Straight to track.
Run
  • 28m 52s
  • 4 miles
  • 07m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

No side ache! Finally! Tried hard to not take off too quick and then find a steady pace. Was hard to tell where everyone was at position-wise since you can't tell when everyone gets off the bike. So the whole run I thought the guy ahead of me was a lap behind - turns out he was actually on my lap and therefore just ahead of me - had I know that I would have tried to catch him toward the end. Good kick to finish.
What would you do differently?:

Ask someone to keep track of what position I'm in and keep me posted. Run more in training (couldn't because my knee was hurt for 3 months).
Post race
Warm down:

1 lap walk, some stretching

What limited your ability to perform faster:

3 months of sickness and a hurt knee from Oct-Jan. - couldn't train very well. Also, travel made it tough to get in the pool.

Event comments:

This was my third time doing this race and it was great as always! Great organizers & volunteers, fun environment, great shirt & goodies bag. I'll do this race every year I'm able. This was a fast group this year - the top six finishers all beat last year's winning time.
