Pre-race routine:

Hotel, a 5' drive from Moody Gardens. I happen to walk up by accident at the pro pre race course meeting Saturday afternoon. Did bike check in, purchased a couple Memorial Hermann 70.3 items. No trouble sleeping with 50 benedryl. Up 2:30, a naked juice and boost. Up at 4:30, banana, apple juice, some instant chicken cup o soup for sodium.
Event warmup:

None. Had 50 min wave wait after pros started. Picked up a beach chair, wetsuit in lap and sipped on gatorade, watched the pro start. Life Flight helicopter did a fly over to commemorate the event. Hydrated so well I had 4 port o let stops before transition closed.
Swim
  • 54m 22s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Wave 11 of 16, guys went first. So much for chivalry. Some current and chop, enough to make me sight every 8 strokes. Three neck hickies from wetsuit despite body glide.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, good thing I had same hickie from a previous swim with wetsuit and an understanding spouse.
Transition 1
  • 04m 22s
Comments:

Wet suit strippers were great. Rushed, and took too long getting Garmin on wrist, wanted it for HR function. Tried turning it more towards me for visual (on bike) and it popped out of wrist band, caught it and put it in bento box...that was close.
What would you do differently?:

Upgrade to 310 XT or take it ez getting it on.
Bike
  • 3h 19m 43s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.82 mile/hr
Comments:

More frontal wind 1st half, winds helped on second half with same watts (neg split)
Rode my watts and pretty much matched my race rehersal rides.Drank as much water as possble.Heat/wind constant, alwsys felt thirsty. Infinit nutrition worked well, no GI issues.
What would you do differently?:

Water handups. After waiting too long to grab a bottle 1st time, learned quickly to grab first water, refill aero, grab a 2nd, top off, drink, splash and chuck before going too far. We were warned about penalty for littering
Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Went well.
What would you do differently?:

Sunscreen, sunscreen !
Run
  • 2h 28m 14s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Good to see people you know are racing, provide encouragement. Ice cold sponges were great at aid stations. 200K gu per hour, 700mg Na per hour, one pee stop entire day at mile 7. Drank 2 cups water at aid stations. Paced pretty evenly throughout run, walked aid stations. Lots of walkers on last lap. It was toasty out there.
Post race
Warm down:

Met family at finish line. Walked over for beer, now that was best beer I've had in a long time... and pizza. Changed clothes and we all had a great dinner together at Tortugas. Margaritas !!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Other than left hip tightness during bike, had to stretch it out every 20 minutes,I raced my race as planned. Heat/wind were a factor but no cramping. Happy with my race execution considering conditions.

Event comments:

Great venue and volunteers.
