Pre-race routine:

drink coffee, show up
Event warmup:

walk around confused and trying to figure everything out.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 440 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

it was a crazy cold windy day! The first 4 waves were able to start and swim, but they cancelled the swim for the remaining 3 waves after the rescue boat capsized, because all of the swimmers were trying to climb into it!

so unfortunately, no swim and thus no first triathlon for me
What would you do differently?:

swim
Transition 1
  • 04m 59s
Comments:

So what they did was start us as if we had just come out of the water in our wetsuits.
the gun went off and we ran from the water's edge, through the woods and to the T area.
full transition and onto the bike.

Unfortunately, what the DIDN'T do was give us a T1 time in our results. They just mashed the
transition time and bike time together which kind of sucks.
What would you do differently?:

I think this transition took me a little long because it was my first one ever.
I sat down to put on socks, had trouble getting my gps on,
that sort of thing. I was, however, very happy with my planning of my T area and execution.
I could have easily shaved a minute or so off, but I'm not too unhappy with how it went.
Bike
  • 33m 44s
  • 10 miles
  • 17.79 mile/hr
Comments:

felt like a good ride. I don't think I was passed at once!
I was a little shocked at how little people seemed to know what they were doing.
Especially considering that I'm the one that's the newbie!
I was constantly having to figure out how to get around slower people who were not riding to the
right. It was either pass on their right (supposed penalty, or cross the yellow lines to pass on the
left. (also a penalty)
Other than that, bike section was fun!
What would you do differently?:

drink a bit more in prep for the run.

Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
What would you do differently?:

nothing really. pretty happy. just get a little smoother every time i guess.
Run
  • 24m 48s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m  min/mile
Comments:

never realized how hard it is to drink from a cup and run at the same time!
really would have preffered water to gatorade at the water stop.
Post race
Event comments:

I think the Max Performance guys did a good job of making the best of a bad situation caused by weather. Certainly nothing they could do about the wind, and canceling the swim was the right
call. I just think they could have taken 15 minutes to slow things down, and figure out the best approach to continuing the race instead of just having everyone start running from the beach.
(which they evidently weren't prepared for because they weren't able to give us a separate T1
and bike split.) Maybe they should have offered a second wave of duathlon? I certainly would have felt a lot better about the day if they had.

Anyway, I still think they did a GREAT job overall with the race and managed to keep us all
happy and safe during a really crappy weather race.
So happy with them in fact, that I signed up for their next race as soon as I got home.
