Pre-race routine:

I had a really long day on Friday and was worried I'd be tired for the race. I didn't get home until about 11:00 on Friday evening and still had to pack. But it gets a lot easier with experience and a good packing list, so I was in bed and ready to sleep by about 12:30. Got up about 5:15 and did the usual breakfast and drove to race.
Event warmup:

Swam about 5 mins to get wet and acclimated, the water was really nice.
Swim
  • 17m 50s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pace seems good, but this is probably a short swim. You can tell by my overall ranking. It was a bigger group to start with than I am accustomed to and I didn't handle the splashing/grabbing/bumping very well. It seemed every time I tried to catch my breath I got a mouthful of water. Finally got settled after the turn and the proceeded to swim WAY wide. Typical.
What would you do differently?:

Give myself a few more second of breathing room to start. That seems to be the only method I can live with based on experiences.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

This went to so fast, I don't even really remember it. I got the suit off so fast I had no issues, which is great. Was totally prepared and had a moment where I wondered if I had forgotten anything it was so smooth.

Fastest T1 in my group

Comments:

This was a strong ride for me, except in two areas. First, I felt really weak on the hills. A lot of gear changes and even though I stood on a few hills, I didn't feel very powerful and was passed a lot. Second, I dropped my chain in the last 10 minutes! I had good momentum at that point and am really bummed. I wonder how much time I lost there...
What would you do differently?:

The hill malaise had something to do with being tired and not fully tapered, I hope. The chain dropping is an avoidable mistake, so I will work to avoid it in the future! I don't care if that happens in future longer races, but it's a buzz kill for a sprint.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Really hustled and thought this was good until I saw some other times! 4th in my group. How did the others manage 35, 36 seconds? Geez.
What would you do differently?:

I guess hustle more.
Run
  • 28m 40s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

I've done worse, but I could have pushed more. I walked up hills at 3 separate times. This is a mediocre result for me.
What would you do differently?:

Push myself more

Event comments:

This is easily the best Vacation Sports race. I give them kudos. It's a nice venue, things were pretty organized, and even the shirts weren't too bad. Although they did run out of smaller sizes. It's not VS if they don't run out of something! I hope to do this race again.
