Pre-race routine:

Wave didn't go off until 11:00 am, so had more time than I am used to. Sleep in, ate some oatmeal, etc. loaded up and drove the hour to Whitewater. Parked and Checked in...
Event warmup:

Ran around the parking lot a couple of times and swam a few laps in the diving well.
Swim
  • 07m 59s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim, felt good. Only had one other person in my lane and I had her beat after the first 100. Just tried to stay relaxed and swim.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Had put quite a bit of time into this T1 due to the weather. Had everything set up very well. Basically had to re-dress before you could ride due to the temp and the rain. I was still cold when I got done...more on that later. Long run out of the pool before you crossed the timing mat. Included in the swim time.
What would you do differently?:

Could have done better getting my socks on with my shoes. That seemed to be my biggest hold up. They were rolled, babypowdered, etc. Just seem to take a while to put on.
Bike
  • 43m 59s
  • 13.7 miles
  • 18.69 mile/hr
Comments:

This was where the race was won or lost and where I lost it. Just not a good ride. Very windy (Gusts up to 30 mph) and the roads were covered with debris from the farmers working in the fields. I obviously need to keep biking more. Seemed like my power was not as strong as it should have been.

I was cold....damn cold. Right foot was going Numb from being cold. I was wet....damn wet. I thought I was going to get blown off the road on 2 occasions but managed to keep the rubber side down. But I kept pushing. Passed a few people and only got passed once and that dude was flying.
What would you do differently?:

Get on my bike and ride....like the song by queen. " I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike! "

And, I would have dressed warmer.
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Good transition. Went smoothly. My right foot was completely numb from being cold coming off the bike so that shoe was tough to get on and feel like it was on correctly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...except have some feeling in my foot.
Run
  • 27m 27s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run, HR was a little high coming off the bike and you go into a pretty steep hill on the course. Took about a mile for my right foot to get any feeling, so that was fun. I bet I looked like I was running like Frankenstein. Several big puddles on the course that you had to navigate around and a wood plank bridge that was just begging for a victim. A couple of the grass downhills made me glad I was a skier because it helped in the controlled slides.

Actually was a fun running course. Would be more fun if it was dry.
What would you do differently?:

Not run in my $150 shoes when it is that muddy.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked a little, ate, stretched. Showered and put on the compression pants and waited around for the final results to be posted.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The fact that I can't ride a bike very fast....?
The wind, the cold, the wet roads, the puddle ridden trail, the slippery bridge, the downhill ski grass hills, etc. (I think that is enough excuses)

Really, just the engine needs more work.

Event comments:

Overall, a good start to the year. Really wanted to be sub 1:20 for this race, but Mother nature did not cooperate. Also, makes me realize that I need to keep riding to get my bike fitness back up to where it should be.
