Pre-race routine:

left hotel, set up transition. It rained from 6am to the race start. Wore the wetsuit to keep warm from 7am until the race started
Event warmup:

Swam 4-5 minutes. Swam right before the start--probably not my best decision of the day.
Swim
  • 08m 42s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

There was a lot of moss and weeds for the first 150 yards. I went out with the front group but quickly fell back when I could not sustain the pace. I felt some constriction in my wetsuit today and it took a long time to find a comfortable rhythm.
What would you do differently?:

Remember that I am not a top swimmer and race my own pace. This was my first open water swim in 6 months and I had forgotten the chaos.
Transition 1
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

T1 overall - 12th. It was freezing in T1 as a cold hard rain was coming down. The grass was quickly turning to mud. I felt disappointed with my swim as I made the transition to biking.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 35m 12s
  • 13.2 miles
  • 22.50 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt strong on the way out and suffered on the way in facing the wind. The rain stung my body and I was glad to hit T2.
What would you do differently?:

I gave my best effort.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

T2 overall - 23rd
It was very slick and muddy in T2. My feet were completely numb from the cold and I could not feel them for a couple of minutes. I had a bit of trouble getting on my shoes.
What would you do differently?:

nothing I could really change with the conditions
Run
  • 22m 46s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

My feet were numb at the beginning of the run as I tried to find my pace. I felt much slower than the resulting times. I stayed in my comfort zone and sprinted the final 100 yards or so to hold off another competitor.
What would you do differently?:

Consistent run training resulted in a new personal best 5k time in this race.
Post race
Warm down:

Put on some dry clothes and took on some water and Gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was not really happy with my swim results and made poor nutrition choices in the days leading up to the race. Perhaps a little more focus on my swim training is in order.

Event comments:

Difficult race based on the weather conditions. I was happy to get this one in the books! Thanks to the event organizers for a race well done.
