Pre-race routine:

Bike, body marking the day before. Set up transition with my stuff. Decided to race without any equipment (speed, heart rate etc). One water bottle on the bike.
Event warmup:

Swim in the ocean about 15 prior to start.
Swim
  • 14m 20s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

First open water race and I was surprised how much easier it was than in the pool - much less traffic.
What would you do differently?:

I would try and not go out so fast.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1 and T2 times are all in the bike times! :(
What would you do differently?:

I was in and out of T1 pretty fast.
Bike
  • 41m 21s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.04 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike course was very, very hard. Rain and wind made the course tricky. Given the conditions I was very pleased. My feet were frozen at the end and I mean frozen. I did not feel my feet again until 2.5KM mark in the run. I nearly lost the bike on the downhill section in all the water. I would have come off and hit a concrete wall at about +45KM, but I got the bike back on course! Great experience that I hope to never repeat. Huge puddles of water everywhere.

I need to understand how and what to dress for in the rain and wind on the bike. I have no idea. Given that I have little road bike experience this is a great result for my first year. I was very pleased with how well I climbed the hill both times. I was passing many, many people on the hills. :)
What would you do differently?:

Learn about what to wear.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 24m 32s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

I was frozen and didn't feel my feet until 2.5KM mark. I almost stopped a couple of times since my feet felt so strange, good thing I didn't.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out feet issues.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weather and the state of my frozen feet. As it turned out I had cut my left big toe very badly in the swim on some rocks. I didn't even know until I took my running shoes off at the end.

Event comments:

Tough year as the weather was horrid. However, if you can race in this you can race in anything.
