Swim
Comments: Wow, this felt horrible. I was ok for the first couple lengths, and then I just couldn't get my breathing right, and kept taking water up my nose. I actually had to stop twice to calm down. What would you do differently?: Get my pool membership back Transition 1
Comments: As usual, very happy with my T1 time. The secret? The bucket that I bring to sit on. The time trial type start made for a very uncongested transition area. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: Very uneventful ride. Going off early prevented runners from being an issue on the first mile or two. Overall I felt really good the whole time. Right off the bat I was passed by twice, after that I passed probably about 8 or 10 folks the rest of the ride. I was hoping for under 45 minutes, so I was pretty happy with this. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 2
Comments: I decided to be fancy and not use my bucket, which was dumb even though it worked out fine. Run
Comments: I was a little nervous about the run, since my increased run fitness from over the winter doesn't seem to have translated too well to bike/run bricks. The first time I did the run course a few weeks ago, I stopped and walked the last 1/4 mile, which I haven't had to do in forever. In the end, it probably helped that I didn't have my Garmin on, so I really didn't know my pace. Didn't get passed the entire run (which felt really strange!) and passed several people. Getting back to the driveway one of the guys I passed on the bike did catch up to me, but I was able to give it a little extra to the finish and stay ahead. What would you do differently?: Probably could have pushed harder, but I was happy with my time. Post race
Warm down: Found my slightly stressed wife (first triathlon by herself with two kids), once everyone was calmed down I got a massage. I saw from the entry list that there were a ton more folks in my AG than last year, and sure enough, the field was pretty stacked. I know the bike course was easier, but my time would have gotten 3rd in AG and 17th overall last year! Still, I was really only disappointed with my swim, and improvement there wasn't going to make enough of a difference to get me higher in the standings. What limited your ability to perform faster: Two month old. Thirty month old. ;) Event comments: Fantastic set up and race, can't say enough about how smoothly everything went. Very much looked forward to this race, since it's 10 minutes from the house. It was a little bit of a challenge getting everyone out of the house, but the timing ended up working out, I was able to get my transition set up in plenty of time.
None, I helped my wife child-wrangle.
